Russia probably now a bigger target since showing up in Syria, even if this turns out not to be a bomb. Russians have big motivation for it to be sabotage, though, and not shoddy maintenance.

An Anatov just crashed in Africa, too, with a mostly American crew. Some survivors and unknown number of deaths.

I would bet the Egyptians never admit it was a security problem, ever. They do not want to have a tourism crisis.

The truth will come out but I doubt the Russian and Egyptian governments ever agree with it, unless its in their political favor.

    Sad, but true.

The wreckage will clearly show what caused the failure, my guess is there are alreadya lot of clues.

Did it fail from the repaired area outwards or not. If not then what did it.

Sharm el Sheikh is a big scuba town. Maybe a pressurized tank got loaded into cargo? Those things will take out anything in their path if the valve leaks and suffers sudden depressurization... Planes have had holes knocked in them from exploding oxygen tanks before, and those are relatively small compared to a scuba tank. It's a longshot, but crossed my mind because of where the flight was coming from.

Armenians...Americans...Australians..Austrians....etc..etc....are we all descendents of Australopithecus?

Australopithecus species played a significant part in human evolution, the genus Homo being derived from Australopithecus at some time after 3 million years ago. Among other things, they were the first hominids to show the presence of a gene that causes increased length and ability of neurons in the brain, the duplicated SRGAP2 gene.[2] One of the australopith species eventually became the Homo genus in Africa around two million years ago (e.g. Homo habilis), and eventually modern humans, H. sapiens sapiens.[3]

It amazes me that the UK and US are willing to leap ahead and proclaim that this is 'probably' a terrorist attack at a time when the investigation is just getting underway and the two countries most affected are saying 'not so fast'. If a US charter flight from Brazil full of only Americans were to go down, can you imagine the Russian government speculating about the cause 4 days after the event? American arrogance is astounding and we don't seem to be getting any better, sorry to say.

    What arrogance????

The US says they have other evidence that there was a bomb on the plane... i.e. radio chatter, etc. other than the actual debris.

Also, there is the 'flash' caught on satellite including evidence that there was not a missile launch that supports an in-air explosion.

If we have evidence we should share it with the investigation, not make grandstanding pronouncements while the investigation is ongoing. How welcome would we find such an announcement from another country during an NTSB investigation and how would we react.

I think it's more likely than not (to borrow the latest US/Uk phrase) that our evidence/intelligence will be proven wrong.

I can sort of see your point but as a bit of context. The UK had 30 holidaymakers murdered a few months ago on a beach in Tunisia so they will possibly over react to threats rather than be criticized for ignoring them. Maybe they knew more then and didn't do enough.

Also, what if the intelligence was quite specific and from an embedded intelligence officer. Would you share that info or protect the source?

I think they have something. Potentially a new type of threat and are being very careful about what is disclosed.

US did not make a "grandstanding pronouncement", do a little research.

Even obama said that there is some evidence that it 'might' be a bomb, based on various things that happened related to the crash.

Also, there is some (not unwarrented) suspicion that Russia and Egypt will try to skew the report.

Now that it's confirmed to be a bomb, we can let the hostility in this thread go.

The way I heard it, the last thing audible before the voice recorder went dead was a sound consistent with other bombed aircraft. And now the Russians are calling in our FBI because of their "bomb expertise", so they must believe it too.

Well, 36 hours on it certainly is looking very much like a bomb meaning the UK US intelligence was in fact accurate (and me not). When Putin suspended flights to Egypt, that got my attention and suggested we might have finally shared something with Russia. Now the information from the French review of the data recorders seems conclusive.

I still contend it was arrogant for the US and UK to go public before sharing intelligence with the Russians (at least), but never mind. We're now looking at days of airport chaos in Sharm el-Sheikh and no telling what kind of global travel chaos from 'enhanced' security procedures going forward.

Surely the spy sats can determine type of thermal explosions from the optical signature...? C4 or equivalent from fuel only...

If it was a bomb, it could have been planted by a regular airport worker at Sharm el-Sheikh. Who knows how thoroughly the Egyptians screen their airport workers?

That's OK. I'm real used to the "Blame America first" types. I lived much of my life near Berkeley and kind of got used to it.

DSP to the rescue again. Those sensors get better with each launch. 45th anniversary of the system this week.
