Car going into paint shop...

Dropped it off Thursday night. Decided I need to get the rust on the doors taken care of. Got a quote to do the whole thing and debating if I want to do that....

Shop is going to send photos. I'll post them when I get them.

 

I've been considering a new paint job for my 308. Could I ask what the quote was to do the whole car? Just curious about roughly what new paint would cost....I don't have the slightest idea what it might be. Thanks.

 

I had a quote 3 years ago for a respray with same color and no body work as the car (77 GTB) was rust free. The only parts removed was the bumpers , rear grills and badgeing. Everything else was just masked. Price was $7K.

 

That price seems absurdly low if the car need anything. I guess it right would be for a "hose and go" job.

 

Now-a-days, $20k+ for a through r&i of all trim is easily doable. Redoing the trim is another $1-2k. This is without bodywork.

 

No body work needed as the car was redone some 15 years before. Sand , tape and spray.

 

That sounds about right.

 

the bodywork on my Blu Sera drysump costed 29,2 K Euro, including a 22% VAT. That is a bare metal work with some body repair to fix averages rust points and a damage we found on the nose, on its right side. Includes rims repaint (sanded) and the opening of the passage fro the single tip exhaust. All the glasses were removed, excludind the front windshield. Included there is a second spoiler painting and the labor cost of removing an reinstalling the shock adsorbers

a mere brush and paint over the old paint with the glasses on the car is one third (7-9 K euro), but imho that's not a solution if you want to keep the car for a long time: that's the usual "dealer type" repainting for a resale. The midway is a big brush (but not bare metal) and bare metal just on the rusted/damaged points with the windows removed: probably 3 k more (10-12 k euro ) but by far better and much longer durability expected.

Fix the damage and blend it in.

To quote my wise old paint man:
"Some cars need a bare metal respray, but we are not going to go there".....

Pulling all the glass is great for a high value car, it will just break all the original panes, on our cars.

He was a master at tinting the factory pack paint, too..I was sorry to see him retire (but glad that he could)..

The bare metal on the rust and some window removal is where we are going with sanding down to base, epoxy fill/primer and sand (repeat until smooth) and then tinted primer, base coat, clear, cut, polish. All between 30-45 days to complete the works. He's taking everything off the car except the front and rear windows.

 

It looks a great price for all that!

The found a few more spots around the side lamps and because of all the checking, they ended up stripping all the paint off the car.

Hope to have a few photos soon. The place is 20m from the house and I've not had a chance to go out and look. He is going to send me photos.

Also, I've decided to delete the side markers and install EU side markers.

I just did this. Bare metal, glass out was 10k
Wheels another 600 approx
Anodize deck grill 1400

So, 12k all in for exterior. Had to be patient and wait almost a year.

 

I would take out the insulation on the parcel shelf by the rear glass as it seems quite common for corrosion here as the studs that hold the trim in pass into the engine bay and these let a small amount of moisture in.

 

Took a year? Uh...OK...that's a shame...

 

I would also look under the windscreen. Had my car tided up in the paintshop only to have the windscreen badly chip on the run home. When the windscreen was removed for replacement there was serious corrosion underneath resulting in new metalwork and repaint of the front wings for the second time! This is the time to do it.

What colour is your leather in the car SeanF - looks lovely? I'm about to re-trim mine and just going through swatches before making a final decision

 

oh, NOW you did it...it's going to be "too shiny"....

 

The leather shop matched the original color which you could still see under the seats and at the seat adjustment handles. Sorry, whatever the Ferrari "tan" was for 1977

Had to be patient for the right people to do it. Results were worth it. Two months was wasted waiting on the incorrect carpet set to come from Italy. So, about 9 months.
