More about CONNOLLY: Leather Makers to the Queen (and Ferrari and Jaguar Too) - NYTimes.com

Leather Makers to the Queen (and Ferrari and Jaguar Too)
    By Kate Singleton
    Published: August 19, 1997

CANTERBURY, England— There's water everywhere. Great vats of it that churn their sodden contents slowly around. Vast bins and baths and basins full of murky liquids. And plenty on the pitted floors, awash with limy aqueous waste and fleshy residues. There's nothing here that doesn't slop, flop, drip and spray. And most of it assails the nostrils too.

Despite the sophisticated machinery that has now shortened many processes and replaced much manual heaving and shoving, tanneries still appear positively medieval in their smells and sounds and general leakiness. So when the outcome of their labors is the most exquisite leatherware money can buy, the whole process appears to be imbued with the spirit of alchemy: the magical art of transmutation whereby base materials are turned into — well — what motorcar buffs would call works of art. For this is the tannery that provides the leather that you find on the inside of Ferraris, Aston Martins, Morgans and Jaguars.

Leather tanning at St. Mildred's Tannery in Canterbury goes back so far that it predates the establishment of the famous cathedral some 1,400 years ago. The firm is owned by the Connolly family, "leather tanners and curriers by appointment to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II." The company was established in 1878 by Samuel and Joseph Connolly, the sons of a tiresmith and wheelwright. So great was their renown as shoesmiths and saddlers that in 1901 they were commissioned to make the leather seats for Edward VII's coronation coach.

At the turn of the century, the Connolly brothers adapted their saddlery skills to meet the demands of the nascent automobile industry. When in 1904 the Honorable Charles Rolls and Henry Royce built their first model, Connolly was chosen to supply the upholstery.
Today the list of carmakers who have turned to Connolly for the last word in luxury interiors reads like a roll of honor. Clients also include Concorde and the QE2 — as well as at least 14 parliaments around the world, including the Palace of Westminster, which sit on Connolly leather.

AFTER more than a century of focusing on seats, the third and fourth generations of Connollys recently decided that their skills and experience could be used to provide a wider range. This has culminated in a new London store that, in addition to leather goods, also sells cashmere sweaters, ties and other accessories. Tucked away behind Hyde Park Corner, the Connolly showroom at 32 Grosvenor Crescent Mews is an elegant exercise in understatement and a far cry from the refined crush of nearby Belgravia shopping.

Appropriately enough, the premises once served as a stable, complete with loose boxes and mews doors that have been sensitively incorporated into the building renovated by Andree Putman. Pride of place on the ground floor is taken by the collection of luggage designed by Ross Lovegrove and made with consummate skill and attention to detail. On the floor above there is a huge table on which the entire range of Connolly automotive and upholstery hides can be unrolled. Here you can touch and sniff the leather, experiencing the beauty of pliancy, grain and hue.

The Connolly headquarters is in the London suburb of Wimbledon. Tanned hides are trucked up to these rambling workshops from Canterbury on wooden "horses." They are inspected, oiled, dyed and sleeked, which is what currying is all about. Then they are stretched on mesh screens before being dried in carefully regulated ovens. Next comes a two-hour tumble in a huge wooden drum to enhance the softness of the leather, and finally a last stretching session using a sophisticated Dynavac machine.

THE essence of this style of tanning and currying is the knowing combination of traditional methods and advanced technology. Hides may now be fleshed and split by machine, but constant hands-on measurement and control are required because no two hides are ever the same.

The finest come from northern Europe, where low temperatures discourage such insects as the warble fly, whose eggs laid under the skin cause considerable damage. Baths of lime and sulfide remove salt, hair and traces of dung from the hides, and the tanning as such replaces all aqueous substances with organic materials and metals. At St. Mildred's, the current alchemy involves trivalent chromium, which soft-ens the hide, and an organic mixture of extracts from acacia bark and the husk of the Indian myrobalan nut, which enhance the leather's rich aroma.

"True leather is something unique, so coating and texturizing it for uniformity literally goes against the grain," says Jonathan Connolly, 36, who looks after the prestigious Ferrari account and is on the design committee planning future retail developments.

"I believe that it's the individuality of leather at its best that our customers find so enticing," he says. "That's really what accounts for the success of our shop too. If things are individual, then they're also exclusive."

More about CONNOLLY: tannery - Canterbury Historical and Archaeological Society

Canterbury Historical and Archaeological Society (CHAS)
    TANNERY SITE Stour Street

When the St Mildred's Tannery site finally closed in 2002 it marked the end of over 200 years of tanning and leather work in Canterbury, associated with six generations of the Williamson family. Stephen Williamson (1770-1813) was born in Canterbury, and baptised at St Paul's church on 6 May 1770. His parents John Williamson and Susannah Row had been married at St Mildred's church (2 September 1760). Stephen founded the firm in the 1790s in premises at 18/19 Sun Street, but around 1810 opened a shop opposite at 5 Sun Street (now part of Debenhams). The outbreak of the Napoleonic wars proved good for business - 5000 troops stationed in the area needed boots, harnesses, and other leather items. Stephen died on 18 March 1813 and his body lies in St Alphege church. His son John James (1792-1881), grandson Stephen (b. 1823) and great grandsons Stephen (b. 1856) and Henry (b. 1867) and later generations all carried on the trade. The family moved from Sun Street to Best Lane in the 1850s, and Stephen (b. 1823) purchased Tower House in Westgate Gardens in 1886.

Despite complaints about the stink of the tannery processes so close to the city centre, the business grew and expanded across the Stour with a small bridge - by 1851 it was employing 7 men and a boy and this rose to 9 men and 3 boys by 1891. In the early 20th century the business became a major supplier to Connollys, a London firm with a specialist currying works in Wimbledon and contracts to supply fine leather for the new motor car trade. The relationship with Connollys thrived, and despite serious fires on the Stour Street site in 1931, Canterbury leather found its way into Rolls Royces, Bentleys, Daimlers, Ferraris, and Jaguars, not to mention the House of Lords. Williamsons was acquired by Connollys in 1963.

The grandson of Stephen Williamson (b. 1856), another Stephen, and his wife Catherine, gave the Tower House and gardens to the City Council in 1936. Catherine (Image 1) became the city's first woman mayor (1938 to 1940) and played a key role in organising the city's civil defence during World War II. After World War II she donated a Book of Remembrance detailing the 121 civilians killed in the bombing of the city - this can be seen in the cathedral choir north aisle.

The large Tannery site on the north side of the Stour has been under development for housing by Bellway Homes. More recently, tannery buildings on the smaller Stour Street site, which have been vacant for many years, have been labelled 'the last serious undeveloped piece of land within the city walls'. Acquired in 2006 by Colin Strickland for around £4 million, this is the building work now (2011) visible from Stour Street. The 'Old Georgian Rectory' property is a puzzle as there seems to be no historic evidence of any rectory on this site. The main tannery industrial block includes an odd mix of brick bonds. Suitable blue plaques (here, Sun Street, Best Lane, Tower House) would make sure we don't forget the contribution of a remarkable Canterbury family.

    Period CONNOLLY Areameter article

"Measuring the superficial area of leather is easy with Connolly's Areameter. The machine is simplicity itself, and broadly consists of a set of geared wheels, to which are attached a convenient arm carrying a pointer. This latter is passed around the edge of the skin to be measured, and the result read off on a dial attached to the central part of the machine.

After exhaustive tests made by Dr. Glazebrook of the National and Physical Laboratory, the Areameter has been recognised as an official standard by the Board of Trade. At a recent meeting of the Leather Trade Section of the London Chamber of Commerce it was recommended to the trade for verifying the measurement of leather and skins, and as a means of determining disputes between buyer and seller.

The machine is put on the market by Connolly's Areameter Company, Brighton Chambers, Denman Street, London Bridge, London SE and is made in various sizes to suit the convenience of users."

S/N 9781 unfortunately and obviously lost its original nero FRANZI interior during restauration...new Franzi hides are not available anymore.

    1967 Ferrari 330 GTS by Pininfarina | Monterey 2015 | RM Sotheby's

The car has just finished a full restoration by marque specialists to its original and highly compelling color combination. The same level of attention to detail was furnished upon the interior, and the car presents entirely as new. Finished in the seldom seen and highly desirable shade of Nocciola (19397) over a Nero Franzi interior.
