thats pretty darn cool. i say you should try to match it to a 355 transaxle so you would have to extend the wheel base?
Measurements are promising on the 308 box BUT one small difference is a big issue. The crank centerline is 3/4" higher than the 308 crank centerline which causes the transfer gear arrangement to simply not work. I could mill the block girdle down to lower the centerline I guess. Interesting....
See? You are already taking measurements... (I'm certainly not an expert, nor an engineer or a mechanician of any sort, but this engine being made for racing, I would have thought that the crank centerline would have been very low? Especially as the 3x8 engines crank are high, this due to the trans arrangement?) Rgds
Yes, but completely different installation. The engine would have been designed to fit an Indy chassis/gearbox - and dry sump, stressed member, and probably suspension pick-ups.
I have a straight cut sequential 6peed in a race car. Probably the last thing you want to run on the streets. Xtrac=big $$$ but certainly better using a 308 transaxle. I wouldnt worry so much on hp but the torque output. gearboxes are rated by torque capacity which shred gears and split cases. Yes the single worse thing about the 308 n boxers dynamically speaking. The heavy lump of motor is pearched up high on top of the trans with gears needed to get back down to the input shaft. They finally got it right with starting with 288gto Mondialt/348 with the input shaft properly located enabling the motors to be mounted about 4-5 inches lower Regards.
I understand the pros and cons of the Xtrac and other race boxes and what im looking for IS craziness, a car that you can only take in limited doses that scratches that itch.

Yeah painfully so, the supercharged 3.5L I built a couple yrs ago was in the mid 700's and a couple things became apparent very very quickly. First there is not enough gears or proper gear ratios in the box for that level of power, second 0-100-0 will happen in just at or under 10secs! after 20min of hot rodding around your neck really starts to hurt from the G-forces. Tire life is measured in minutes, and the brakes are never big enough. It also plants a permanent stupid grin on your face! Oh and sometimes helicopters will follow you if you're having to much fun!
Now I'm really interested... (even if I am usually a fervent ambassador of non-modified, 100% original OEM cars...) Rgds
Given the design of the gearbox/transaxle and assuming the whole thing can support the power/torque, is there even a solution for this which utilizes the current design? Sure, throw enough money at something is one thing, but there are physical constraints to think about, right? That does sound like fun
