Wondering the Ferrari communities thoughts are on which is more desirable / collectible: The 512M (which is a truly iconic car with the final evolution of the classic formula 1 based flat 12 and last of the V12 mid engine cars before the F50/Enzo/La Ferrari) or the topless 550 Barchetta (great engine, 275 inspired shape, less than 500 made).

    Thoughts and reasoning?

I also considered the 512 M however I recently purchased a Barchetta (just in the last few days) i also considered a 575 SA and one of the things i like about the barchetta is the front engine V12 full roadster this is the last V12 roadster(chopped windshield) likely to be built especially with the manual transmission . and I love 550s of which i also have one.. and to top it off they are very low (now days) numbers and are the last of the true numbered limited edition cars... of course i fell in love with the car years ago when someone in the neighborhood had one and well what else can i say it should be to me in a week or two ...
great investment who knows ... Great fun oh yeah......

    +1

Both are great but I have a better chance at seeing a 512M or meeting the Pope than I have at seeing a "little boat".

Hey I'm a poet and did not know it!!! :p

Depends what you mean by desirable..I have a 512M and a regular 550. 550 is a better car but for thrill/involvement, excitement and generally being completely nuts the M is in a different league. Looks more spectacular even than Barchetta, in my view.
    And it has a roof..
If you are talking values, probably Barchetta, because it's unique, and while there were just 500 512Ms you can buy a 512TR which is nearly an M and there were 2000+ of those. But Barchettas already more expensive, at least here.

Barchetta. As crazy as this sounds it seems- to my eyes at least- they are only going up. Its a modern open V12 built in limited numbers. As mentioned, the last of the truly numbered cars. And it only came in stick shift. Congratulations Larry on your acquisition. I suggest you hunt down a set of luggage and helmets and the leather baseball caps if the car doesn't have those already.
