MSD

Ok before telling me to use search. I did for 3 days and I couldn't find what I was looking for.

Can you use the MSD and trigger it with the neg coil wire from the digiplex? Thus maintaining ignition curve. Basically having the digiplex trigger the MSD.

I was able to do this with my alfas. Which has a similar style ignition set up. But not with a CDI digiplex but a bocshe amplifier. Same system of sensors and distributor.

Should work, wire the MSD's points wire (white) to terminal #11 of the Digiplex. You need an MSD 8910 tach adapter (or similar) to be able to run the Ferrari tacho in this setup.

May I ask which MSD unit you used?

 

I have a few from other cars. 6a, 6al, 6t. I just need to buy a match to run 2 for the ferrari

I been using MSD since their first unit. Mostly the 7 in my old drag cars. But I want to run one in my limo. The MSD DIS. Nice thing with running the MSD, Is you can convert back to original in case of failure with 2 jumper wires, like having a redundant ignition system.

Before you spend money, keep in mind that you won't see much of a difference installing a set of MSD 6A units compared to a Digiplex setup with fine tip spark plus (as in NGK BPR EIX).

Have a look at the Digiplex terminal 10, if there is a wire connected to it in your setup, then you might not require a tacho adapter.

Mike, yes, no problem, but you need two units, one for each MED805A Digiplex in your QV.
You also need to exchange the factory BAE209B coils against CDI coils such as the MSD Blaster II (8202) or Blaster HVC (8252).

 

I was wondering about the digiplex. It is a cdi? Yes? Probably a pretty good set up. My experience with using a MSD has been a good one. But never with an original CDI system, mostly added to an amplified ignitions system.

Digiplex units are inductive transistor ignitions, they supply a nice long spark and combined with fine tip spark plugs the spark discharge voltage is sufficient for good cold and hot starts.

MSD 6A CDI units can supply about 2-2.5x the spark discharge voltage but have a much short spark duration (which is why MSD inplementednthe multiple spark discharge for enabling better hot and cold starts).

In a non turbo low compression engine there should not be a big difference (if at all) between the two setups, my personal preference are high power transistor inductive setups due to the >10x longer spark duration.
