Took the Tweeter triangles off today. Sort of wished I hadn't, seen better speakers in a kids toy. Which leads me to ask.... 1. How to get the grill out of the triangle ? 2. Any suggestions on replacement tweeters that can fit ? 3. Any suggestions on replacement main speakers ?
I just posted a thread on this. Tweeters are 1" and the stock door speakers are 6.5". Focal are a great brand and that is what I used. Make sure you use an external power amp because the stock radio only has 18 watts. Talk to Mike at Scuderia Audio he has a set of Focals that pretty much drops right in.
Hello Haggis, Lots of threads on this. For me, I replaced the stock speakers with Hertz HSK 165 system which consisted of a woofer and tweeter. On paper, the woofers were a direct replacement, however that is not entirely accurate. I did have to trim a bit of metal away in the door to accommodate the extra depth of the speaker frame. It was not that big a deal though. I was able to reuse the original speaker grill so exact fit back into the door card and now looks just like original. Very easy to reuse the original grill. Just have to cut it away from original speaker and then screw it in place on new speaker. I removed original tweeter from plastic triangle and trimmed plastic with small utility knife and Dremel tool to accommodate new Hertz tweeter. I secured the tweeter in place into plastic triangle with a very small amount of windshield adhesive compound ... that black stuff you can roll and form between your fingers that is super sticky and can be moulded to shape. It works great, has kept the tweeter secure for going on two years now and if I ever need to replace the tweeter can be easily done. When you replace original speakers you will be faced with decision about where to place the crossover. On many speaker systems the crossover is about the size of a pack of cigarettes. I decided to place crossover under the dash. This placement requires that I had to run new wires to the door speakers. I upgraded wires to use 16AWG speaker wire. This was pain the ass. Had to drill hole in door panel to route new wires. If you place crossover inside door, then you can use existing incoming wires, but they are small gauge wires. Like 20AWG or so. And you have to mount the crossover somewhere in the door. My thought at the time was that door mounting would make it difficult to adjust crossover after the install. In hindsight, if I were to do this again, I would install crossover inside the door. Makes wiring much easier. The incoming 20AWG is bit too small for the new speakers, but it would likely be adequate for in car use. I re-used the original sub woofer enclosure. I replace the speaker and passive radiator that was in there with two Focal 5.25" sub woofers. The enclosure and sub woofers are not optimal, but it looks pure original and bass response is much improved. I used the DVD changer location to install a new Hertz power amp. This was big improvement and it has plenty of power to drive the new speakers. I did all the work myself. It was bigger job than I originally anticipated, but in the end worked out with good results.
