I totally agree- I am also getting tired of how great a gated shifter is. I've had both. I prefer F1. Who cares it is personal preference. Everyone buy what they like. Done.

When I bought mine 5 years ago, I really wanted a stick. And I'm glad that I bought a stick. :)

But we're in a bubble that's going to pop. This environment isn't normal. It's not sustainable. And when it pops all the feel good about how my car is worth "xxx" is going to change. "Investment" and car made in quantities above 1000 usually don't mix well.

OTOH the last housing bubble somehow convinced people that spending 50% of your take home income on a house payment is "acceptable" so who knows what the effects of this car bubble will be.

I absolutely love driving the F1. Truly love it. And it's likely my second Ferrari will have it ;)

But that wasn't what I wanted for my first Ferrari.

So, when all is said and done and the bubble 'pops', if I "overpaid" for my stick I don't really care. Considering my distance from a Ferrari mechanic, I felt it worth it on the potential reliability side (as long as I don't smoke the clutch) and worth it to feel that connection to the road and the Ferraris of the past.

The housing bubble....another thing that's happening all over again. Did you know that they make 50-year loans in Canada? I had to ask a friend who lived there because the house prices are ridiculous and the salaries are not that much higher than the US. I have friends in CA overpaying in large amounts for homes. I tried to tell them to wait, but no one is listening. :(

I wonder how much a manual F430 can sell for these days.

A short sermon from the aged

In this bickering about values and what to value and who is holier than the other guy, you all miss a much more important point - the general upswing in the prices of Ferraris (all old cars really) creates a situation where people value the cars and want to take care of them, preserve them for the future. This is a VERY good thing.

I am old enough to remember when old Ferraris (and other Italian exotics, and most any old cars) were pretty much worthless. This was in the early 70s, the days of the oil crisis/smog crisis/EPA crisis/Vietnam crisis/stock market crash crisis/hippie crisis. My brother and I were going to Italy to search for old cars to bring to America, fix them up, and then hopefully sell them for a small profit. At that time in Italy people actually scorned their own exotic cars. I once looked at a Miura for sale (about $2,000 if I remember right, but a post 1967 car so difficult to import) that the owner detested so much that he was putting out his cigarettes in the carpets - burn marks everywhere. Car was a filthy mess. I loved these cars - I bought some because I wanted to be around them, to save them, and to try to fix them up and hopefully make a few dollars in the process.

Even back in the early 90s, after the last great bubble burst in values, old Ferraris were typically scorned. I had a GTC at the time (bought it for $50K in 85 - was worth some $250K in the late 80s - worth $80K in the early 90s) and I remember going to Fantasy Junction (Emeryville, CA - a place that specializes in selling exotic cars) to check out another GTC for sale (pretty much all of the cars were out of Italy by this time). It was in 3- condition, worn and frayed - just the type of car I would buy and fix up. I think the ask price was $70K. Anyway - it had a sign on it that read 'Kick A Ferrari - $50.' That is scorn!!!!!!!!!!!!

So I say this - it is good for all of us - and it is GOOD FOR THE CARS - for prices to generally increase. In my opinion, prices right now for the desirable older cars are ridiculous and due for a correction. How many of you guys that whine about high prices and dilettante owners will strep up and buy when that happens? I am old now - my days of buying and fixing up old cars are over. Someone else needs to step up. Rising prices will encourage that person to do so.

    Amen

They are selling just a little less than CS.... Almost all I saw were around $150k+ with a few just under $200k.

    Is it truly appreciating?

or perhaps we got so used to 0% inflation the last 5 years that we forgot that in a healthy economy that money is worth 2-3% less every year. Breaking even sounds about right...

I seriously cringe and feel bad for a 10 years old car that's been driven like 8000 miles. you'll probably have more problem with that car than a 10 years old that's been maintained and driven during the same period. seals designed to be pressurized and metals parts that designed to operate above ambient temperature do not do well sitting.

Oh wait, its a Ferrari, its parts are special so those factors must not be true.

US-based armchair experts on here will firmly tell you otherwise, and it reflects in their purchases. More often than not you will read folks being more comfortable and thrilled about buying decade old cars w under 5,000 miles. They think changing fluids and rotating tires is more than adequate lol. Granted sure, some folks are purely collectors rather than drivers but those that happen to drive the car will probably get a rude awakening and end up pulling out another wad of cash.

And yes, by the armchair experts' criteria, anything over 5,000 miles is considered "high mileage".

This is absolutely correct. The cars need a good 1000 miles a year or so to stay healthy, and that includes a proper annual service and a real major every 5-6 years.

Way to turn the thread towards the direction of another thread that you say you hate. Until you, this thread primarily was discussing the value of manual 360's which like it or not fetches a premium in today's market (which I think is great for everyone, especially signaling the desires of car enthusiasts). Yes people say they like enjoy the car they have - that's why @they@ bought it.

Totally agree. These cars deserved to be maintained properly and stored indoors. It's good that people are valuing used Ferraris. I consider myself a steward of my F cars as I don't skimp on maintenance and I store them indoors. If these cars did nothing but depreciate like many German performance cars do then they'd eventually end up in the hands of owners who buy them for cheap and then skimp on maintenance because they can't afford it.

That being said I am scared about how quickly the 3 pedal 360s are appreciating right now. I need to get a 3 pedal coupe before it's too late!

i think you may already be too late unless you want to really pay up. Last I checked there were only 4-5 manuals for sale in the entire country on autotrader.

    If 550s can sell for 200k I can see a manual 360 going for 140. :)

I know it's crazy! Looks like $130-$140K is the new reality for garage queen manual 360s. You can get one for a lot less than that if you accept more miles, at least for now.

    Stop at four.

This is good advice! And would be doable since I have a 4 car garage so the Ferraris would never have to sit outside. The Porsches can be demoted to the driveway :D

Now the really stressful part is deciding which two F cars to add before stopping at 4... (first world problems, haha)
