Hi -- pardon me if these questions have been asked and answered before, but a search didn't yield results. I currently own a Maranello and am about to purchase a 2007 599 with 20,000 miles.

My questions are: 1) Should I obtain a PPI? 2) Never having had a car with an F1 transmission, do the clutches need to be inspected for wear as in a classic manual transmission? And 3) What specifically should I look for when buying this car?

Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

    Regards,
    Frank

    Hi Frank,

I went the same way 2 years ago. Both cars are absolutely delightful, although quite different in character.

    As a quick check:

    1) Have the cars ECUs read out by a Ferrari dealer or someone having the proper read out device. The mass of data includes (calculated, not "real" measurement) clutch wear. I would think that this a very important information. When buying my car it had a similar milage and the dealer, upon my request as a condition for purchase interest, kindly had the car brought to a Ferrari dealer for such readout. The result for the clutch was somewhat slightly over 10% wear (original clutch). Among other data, that provided great confidence that the prior owner moved the car moderately only, and the deal was concluded.

    2) Check for any leaks of the shocks.

    3) Check that the side windows do not rattle and are well fixed to their base. Open door and try to move the window up and down at the rear upper edge. If this is wiggly, this is an easy repair, but somewhat time consuming (you need to tighten one or two screws but need to dissassemble the door trim completely for that).

    4) Check condition of the trim in the boot. It is of inferior quality and prone to wear.

    5) Check the combined water/oil pump, this sometimes goes wrong at low milages already and is quite expensive to replace.

    6) Aside this, just the "usual" stuff ;)

Good luck, you will not regret your decision, if you buy a proper car.

    Cheers, Bernhard

Thanks so much Bernhard. Really appreciate your ideas. Your #4 point reminds me of my Maranello - rubber trunk gasket so prone to ripping. With respect to the 599, I'm trying to control my excitement as I found the perfect car -- Rosso Rubino with beige and seat piping and stitching to match the exterior. Car appears flawless, at least on the outside. Wish I had better negotiating skills.
    Regards, Frank

    Hi Frank,

    For negotiation just try these:

    - 2007 less desired, there were several important updates in 2008
    - no carbon brakes (if true)
    - no carbon interior (if true)
    - rear shelf without leather (if true)
    - no badges (if true)
    - milage where typically the shocks and the water/oil pump may go (some 6 to 8 k€ for that) ;o))
    - Rosso generally a less desired color for 599, difficult to sell (indeed at least here in Germany somewhat true, very few were sold new in red)
    - set of new tires due in the near future (if true)
    - bad/missing/incomplete service histrory (if true, anual services done?)
    - more than one owner (if true)
    - no extended warranty (if true)
    - tbc

    ;) :D

Might help you pressing the guys for a few grand. Good luck and do not let yourselfe be detracted by the above "arguments", if the car is really fine by your own judgment.

Not on that 20 000 mile of your but others a PPI of the ccm carbon ceramic discs wear and life left is necessary on cars with more than 65000 km because replacement can cost you 20000 usd or 18000 euro

Stunning, very happy for you. She's a beauty.

Curious - what did the clutch measure at (% used)?

    Also, sending you a PM.

    A few responses:

    1) Thanks, Terry. I will.
    2) Less than 10% worn.
    3) No ding from what I have learned/asked. Was told by a dealer in the West that another in the same color combo was indeed dinged. We did a serial number check and it wasn't this one. If you think it was this car, please PM me. Thanks.

I intend to, Wil. Thanks. Looking very forward to driving it seriously. Never had an F1 transmission before, so that will be an interesting experience that I know I will enjoy. Frank

Thanks, Sean. Can't wait to get it. But based on what another FChatter said, doing another PPI to ensure car has not been dinged. The value of this site and the people on it!

Lots of white ones out there. One has the roof wrapped in black - looks great.

An even more intensive examination of the car's paint and body (to assess even minor damage) was conducted today -- and it received a clean bill of health. No issues. Car on its way tomorrow! Frank
