Hi Tifoso. You mention that your Larini rear boxes quiets down at high revs. From all my 456M exhaust trail and error (and all the expences), I have found out that the center muffler/resonator (especially on the 456 which is bigger than on the 550) quiet the sound at higher revs. If you put on straight pipes or X-pipe, ut will probably be just a littlebit louder at idle but alot louder at higher revs. (What you seem to be looking for). For normal use in USA or a few slower traffic countries in Europe, this is fine, but for Germany where you can cruise at 140 mph., you have to have some high rev muffler, so that is probably why it is there, but for all the other countries where you cant go that fast it is just an addition to the car which actually decrease the amount of enjoyment.

Thanks, good to hear. This has been my experience in the past with other cars as well. In fact, I have found (again, on other cars) - after adding a "performance exhaust" that did not deliver the expected aria at higher revs - that only by replacing headers could I get the sound that car enthusiasts covet - an exhaust note that is refined and controlled down low, and crescendos to a loud wail as you approach redline. I had hoped that replacing the center section in the 456 would help with this (likely with an x-pipe for best sound......at the expense of a few ponies), but as I mentioned, I would like a couple of small resonators to ensure that the sound is not too "raw," which would not be appropriate for a 2+2 GT like the 456....

I have a used Larini X-pipe with only around 200 miles on it. It's the 456 type(1992-1997). Won't fit the 456M. It adds a fantastic sound over the stock pre-muffler, but it's still not "too" loud in keeping with the character of the car. PM me if interested. $500 + shipping(or pickup in Maryland) -Chris

I love my straight pipes and Tubis. If you want quiet just use a higher gear.
