I noticed that there is a huge difference in th UK market compared to other markets, for example Italy, when it comes to the average milage on a 308. Any theories? The milage of the UK cars seems more realistic considering the age of the car. In general I find it strange the you hardly see any cars above 100 000 km. After all, it's still not much for a 30-40 year old car...

Many cars are advertised with current odometer reading. If it is 30.000 and there is no history from the previous 30-40 years (which is oftne the case), it can be either 130K of 30K. Sellers want to think it is 30K.

If a cars history is not complete, you just don't know what the real mileage is. Just check the cars condition to see if it matches the odometer reading.

The ad states "Dit exemplaar heeft na alle waarschijnlijkheid slechts 12500 Miles gereden!" This translated: : "This car is strongly believed to have just 12.500 miles on the odometer".

If the car history/mileage can be checked/proven and/or is very well documented I, as a car seller, woudn't use words like "believed to" and "probably" and "very likely" etc. But I'm not a car seller/dealer..

Here's what looks to be a very good original fiberglass 308 with low KMs. No affiliation, but I've done some business with these guys in the past. They are good people and clearly not shy on price.

That part of the text , I don't event want to believe, it's too scary! My spare tire is original, and it looks very good as long as you don't touch it and feel how hard the rubber has become...

That is my car. I didn't know what the right price is in the marketplace so I figured I would send it to auction and see. They chose the estimate after seeing and inspecting the car and I asked for the estimate to be as low as possible to encourage bidding. Someone is going to go home with a spectacular 308.

The Bonham's description states the following:"

The CARFAX says that during this time, the reported mileage was inaccurate. According to a written statement by a previous owner, this was due to an issue while on a battery tender, adding in excess of 10,000 miles. In 2012, after careful inspection of the mechanical systems, the odometer was returned to what is believed to be the correct mileage."

Can someone explain how a battery tender could add 10K miles? Does this occur often?

I have a signed affidavit from a previous owner attesting to such - sworn under penalty of law - and it looks like the owner a few before me ended up putting it back to where it should have been. Someone else will have to answer as to how often it happens. Either way, I don't think it's a big deal as the car is not being represented as a low mileage garage queen, even though it certainly looks like it could be one.

I will say that when I got the car, the electrical system would do some weird things and it took a little sorting to get it all organized - all traced back to loose ground wires and a couple of mis wired parts. The owner before me had upgraded the fusebox to the birdman box and finished off some other things to make it perfect.

I cannot imagine how an odometer would start running by itself from a faulty battery tender.
So the odometer has been tampered with. Just like many other classic cars, because it is just too easy to disconnect etc.

Nice car though, so I would not worry about this issue too much.

I have never heard of the odometer changing due to a battery tender....also it says the aluminium body work was repainted. I though the QVs were all galvanized steel? Still, nice looking car. GLWS

It's steel, other than the hood and deck lid. I didn't realize they wrote that. I don't know if I can get that changed at this late date. Incidentally, the car is the subject of a huge restoration thread in the sticky part of this section. People can see a lot of what was done. What's not in that thread that I had to reskin the doors because I didn't like the short cut done on the lowers, redo some of the paint, put in a new clutch (it had a Daytona clutch) fix some of the electricals. The owner before me, azcarguy, redid just about everything in the engine bay, including new injectors, lines, plugs, plug wires, all new SRI everything, and a few other things to fix some things done in the restoration not quite to his standards.

As far as the mileage goes, there wasn't anything that I could do about it. I wanted it disclosed and showed the affidavit that was in the file with the car and there is a recent compression test to show that this isn't some old, tired engine. I don't know which owner turned it back, either. Not only that but I don't think it's all that important as so much has been replaced by the last three owners. I know that I've never seen a nicer 308 GTB QV, even at places like Cavallino, and there are all kinds of people fawning over those cars.

I can't keep it as I have too many cars and the best thing to do is let the condition of the car speak for itself and sell it at no reserve. It's a spectacular car and will make someone very happy.

Isn't the odometer a mechanical linkage to the transmission?

I believe there is an electronic pickup that has the connector that is famous for getting unplugged on some cars.

That's the car. He did a pretty amazing job. The next owner and I took it to the next level but it wouldn't have been possible without everything Jason did. He was really spectacular.

It is electronic, once in a while (on startup, if I haven't driven it for a week or so) the speedo will jump around from 10 up to 40 mph or so, it then clicks the odometer a few tenths. So I guess I actually have LESS miles then the odometer says! Yea!

Something else interesting: the speedometer in my 308 reads about 18% high. I remember the first time I drove it on the highway, I was like, "man, this car is FAST" because the speedo was reading 90 mph with very little effort. Well, I have a GPS speedo on my phone and when I checked it, the speedo is off. I wonder if that also translates into the miles coming on the odometer at a higher rate as well. Hopefully someone knows the answer to that.
