My alternator squeals when it first turns over... So I know when it kicks in... I can drive my testarossa about 30-40 minutes before it kicks in. That's on a 2 year old battery that lives on a trickle charger... No radio or airconditioner, low revs... The battery in a testarossa is pretty big...
Just go buy another car battery for $100 and keep it in your trunk. Change it out if the original one runs low...
They can grab onto the lower frame/front a arms. Just be aware/careful when they tighten the cable that it doesn't rise too much and damage the front chin spoiler. I've had my 348 winched onto a flatbed and if they can get that on, they can get a 355. It just takes time and care. Don't just assume every truck driver isnt going to care. Get in touch with some of the local specialty/hot rod/car shops/dealers. Those guys often use flatbeds and will have trusted guys/truckers who know how to move nice cars.
Please don't take offense, but the risk vs reward ratio is simply not there. Flatbed is the right answer... if the injectors start tailing off you risk running lean, if the ignition doesn't reliably fire the plugs you'll be dumping fuel on the cats, and if nothing goes bad you will have saved a few dollars. If you are set on doing this, make sure that you have a fully charged battery, start it with a booster battery, and have a back-up plan. Don't run any electrical stuff and don't run any accessories that you don't need (to include AC, blower fans, stereo, lights, etc). Now, if it were me, I would just remove the alternator and drive it over to where you need it repaired/replaced, drive home, and install it. I mean if you are seriously trying to save some money, do the job yourself. The towing bill can't be that much.
I am in San Clemente if that helps... I would let you charge up here. As far as the flat bed goes, with care the car can be winched on without damage. BTW, there is more clearance if you pull the car on backwards, but that means being careful as the nose rotates towards the ground.
The latest plan-guaranteed success according to my Wrench: top off battery w trickle charge tonight. Connect Jump Pack/antigravity battery pack to engine bay posts. Zip tie it in place. Larry says no question I will make it 25-30mi to Orange/his shop in this config. What I do now know is that I can start the car and drive for 10-12 mins to a destination and connect trickle charger for 1-2 hrs in between jaunts. Did 3 of these today, no prob. Battery is a die hard 34R
Tell me Bruce. This was larrys idea. He said he ran F50 this way under similar circumstances. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
You did 3 "jaunts" of 10-12 minute drives followed by 1-2 hrs of trickle charging in between each drive today and you don't have "time to sit around" for a tow truck to show up? At this point just drive the thing and let us know how it goes.
Made it w/o issue. The answer in my case is 29.7 miles in 37 minutes. My contribution for data collection in '15.
Back in 2012 I drove from Sante Fe New Mexico to Denver with no alternator, fresh battery with a 2 hour lunch break in Raton to recharge and another hour in Colorado Springs to recharge. Would not want to do it again, but with a fresh battery and charger it can be done.
