I am new comer to this forum from China. As the one of the first delivered FF owner , I got into a hot discussion today with a so called "Ferrari Expert" here in Beijing. His statement is that FF is a very "low” car because of :

    1) the engine is rubbish due to oil leakage.
    2) the 4x4 system is rubbish due to its "transfer box" and electric system, which drmaticlly reduced power to wheels. he said the "on-wheel-power"is even not comparable with SLS
    AMG .

clearly those are the issue for me at all. my FF has so far clocked more than 12,000 KM and I am still very , very happy with car.

another issue come across when ask him why FF engine has got oil leak and F12 does not? he said they are different engine. For me, they are same engine with different RMP and compression ratio…

Gent, please post your comment and let me know if I am old idiot or vice verse.

    thanks a lot in advnace.

Welcome and congratulations on the car. Might help for you to complete your profile and post some pictures of your car.

    1) I have not heard of ANY issue with oil leakage with the F140 engine (which is in the FF, F12, et al). In fact, they are actually very good at not consuming oil, either.

    2) the basic engine (Type 140) is the same in the F12 and FF. There are minor differences; F12 has different mapping, has the intake resonators, etc etc but the core is essentially the same (i.e Type 140). All the pieces that keep oil inside, are identical.

    3) your friend seems uneducated about the 4RM system, both in how it works and what it's designed to do. The FF does not have a transfer case like traditional AWD cars. I also think the Getrag DCT is the same box in the AMG SLS....?

Perhaps your friend is just jealous. Great that you are driving the car.

All over the world I find this to be true.
Anyone who tells you they are a car 'expert' (not enthusiast, car nut, etc) certainly is not an expert.
Real experts (as in any field) demonstrate they are experts without having to announce their 'status'...

On your points - well covered above. I'll be happy to put my FF up against an SLS in a standing start drag if the opportunity presents itself and post the results of that will help :)

Why do you care so much about what people say. I have no time for hot discussions with people about cars. Thankfully I make enough money to buy and drive what I like for my own reasons.

The person who said those things is wrong. There are things to criticize with any car but Ferrari is famous for their V12 motors and they are fantastic motors. Their AWD system isn't perfect but its very innovative and quite a bit lighter weight than a normal AWD setup. Ask most people who have FFs what they think and you will hear very positive comments.

With friends like that who needs enemies ! He's a fool. Jealous fool I bet.

FF is a rear transaxle car + HELP AS NEEDED. Torque vectoring, slipping, etc. is the help.

It's not 4WD. No major understeer or heavy feel of the other super cars with 4WD. It feel real wheel + more solid. Not 4WD. If you are cornering and high torque you can feel a LITTLE understeer. That's it.

Gears 1 to 4 have help from 2 gears in separate PTU (power take off) unit up front. 1st and 2nd rear = 1st in front. 3rd and 4th rear = 2nd gear front.

    Gears 5-7 are rear only.
Max power up front is 20%

The engines are rock solid and tuned for more low torque vs high power in the F12. It's a monster.

The FF has every bit of tech Ferrari had to it's name in 2011.

cannot agree any more. the FF has been with me for more than 3 years, and I am really so happy with the car. It is a SUV in Ferrari's term.

great to hear from you and sorry for came later. I think all of us , or the people who has got basic engine idea will know that the FF/F12 is one engine, in two derivatives . Even two car 's basic structuer is very similar...

He sounds like the kind of guy you just give a blank stare when he starts flapping his jaw at a car meet or the like.

Don't waste too much time telling him what you know and explaining things. If he's like all the other "experts" out there, he will still tell you that you're wrong. Ask him what his source to all this info is and what his personal experiences are. I've never seen or heard of a leak.

Just curious. What does this "expert" drive himself?

Keep it. That's cheaper than USD. And you have a car that you know and love that has already depreciated.

Peter - slightly off-thread, what's the car parked behind the Speciale in your photo?
