Just wondered if ferrari built the cars in batches or mixed models on the assembly line. My chassis number is 29007, it seems all of the ferrari's I know about dont have numbers anywhere close to one another. Would there be another 308 with 29009 or 29005 or could it be a 512BB next in line?

For Right Hand Drive manufactured in the 1970 80's they issued chassis numbers in batches, for example a 308GTB built in 1980 had a chassis range of 30379 - 34347 and similary 308GTS built in 1980 had a chassis range of 30119 - 32047.

Another interesting point is up the the mid to late eighties all RHD cars chassis number's ended with an odd number and all LHD cars ended with an even number, the only exception to this 288GTO. After 1988 Ferrari changed the format of the chassis number and the eigth digit of the chassis number denoted which market the vehicle was built for. For example the letter "A" signifies LHD for the US market, "B" signifies LHD for the European market and so on.

The cars were all mixed up so teh next chassis number after your 308 could easily be a 512BB

I am sure taht Ferrari_uk_tech has made a mistake when he said "Another interesting point is up the the mid to late eighties all RHD cars chassis number's ended with an odd number and all LHD cars ended with an even number". Initially (up to late eighties) all road cars had odd numbers (both RHD & LHD) whilst race cars had even numbers. From chassis number 75000 even numbers were also used on road cars - this would have been around 1988/89.

    Paul,

Sometimes Ferrari built cars in batches, for example the North American version 1976 308 GTB Fiberglass. The North American version Fiberglass GTBs, according to Gerald Roush in the FML, were made in three groups in mid-1976: 20 in May (19397-19435), 40 in June (19505-19583), and a final batch of 40 in July (19725-19805). Each batch of cars had consecutive (odd) serial numbers.

Interesting, its funny to see 3 completely different answers. It makes sense to make them in batches but you never know with ferrari I guess.

I have had this thread before with NO straight answers! My '77 308 Euro is VIN 23003. As far as the sequencing goes, mine should be umong the first 348 308's ever built. I have NEVER gotten a straight answer as to:

    1) Did Ferrari build these cars in sequence?
    2) Did they build 100 or 200 Euro's first?

I know I have a very low production number car, but I do noyt know exactly how low it is!

In general: NO ferrari does not build in batches. There are always exceptions, like the like last 300 550 Barchettas that had a following s/n, and the last series of F50's had every 5th like 136150, 136155, 136160 and so on.

    Hi Paul,

The closest I have in my DB:

    28987: 512 BB
    28989: 308 GTS
    28991: 308 GTS
    29001: 308 GTS

    29009: 308 GTB
    29011: 308 GTB
    29013: 308 GTB

They produced small batches (for example 3 GTB, 5 GTS, 2 BB and 1 400) at that time, depending on the car and the peridod of production of a particular model, but no real rules.

    Ciao
    Greg

My steel carb North America 308GTB is #22127, making it an early steel bodied example.

But remember that when they needed a racing variant, they could reroute any chassis as needed to Micheletto to fab. An interesting question. I'm sure someday someone will figure it out.

Anyone note the VIN of the Gulf 308GTB at Cavallino? That would be an example of a street VIN number converted to racing.

As for early race cars, it's interesting that sometimes more examples survive today than were originally built! HTH
