I guess it was bound to happen sooner or later, took my 2012 (built in 2011) in for a simple secondary control valve replacement under warranty (smog control) and Got my car back today. Confirmed that Ferrari required them to do all available updates.

No more wild exhaust sounds upon down shifting, just smooth even sound now, rest in peace burbles, pops and crackles, you will be missed.

Car runs damn good though and she still screams at higher rpms.

My 2012 spider still has burbles, pops and crackles...but have no comparison to 2010-11. I believe the spider sounds better than the ltalia by design. Also l have disconnected the baffles so they are open all the time. This is cheap to do...won't void warranty and is easily reversed.

My 2014 Spider sounds awesome with full pop's crackers burbles etc... I have a Capristo remote exhaust bypass valve controller and it works like a charm. I recommend installing if you can.

The key to pops ect is for the valves to remain open under deacceleration. Not saying its 2010 style, but since adding a remote valve controller, the sound is much better with overrun sounds.

I feel your pain. I've been in a war of words with ferrari the last 2 months since getting mine back. I can't even get them to tell me why it was needed, and what it was supposed to do! I told them i want my old car back. They have decided to punt and just started referring me to the dealer, but the dealer knows nothing either.

I'm considering consulting an attorney if anyone else is interested in joining. I'm not a litigious person by any means, but I've wasted so much time on this just trying to even get an answer as to why it was even necessary in the first place. I can't believe they can change the car so dramatically and not even inform owners why or what it is supposed to do.

Cheaper than hiring an attorney: buy a set of "old" ECU's of 2010 ... ? :)

I'd resist going down the legal route if at all possible.. The cost would be enormous and the outcome seems unlikely to be in your favor IMO... Try adding an exhaust controller like mine or find a way to keep the valves open (Theres plenty of advice on the forum) and see if that makes a difference. Regardless it will be a heck of a lot cheaper and less stressful then litigation.

U can fight them...but they have legal rights to change software as a company...as any other company's BMW .audi and so forth.
If you don't want them messing with your car don't take it to Ferrari for service.

It has nothing to do with the valves open or closed, I have mine open all the time, but after the ecu update its just not the same, even my gf noticed and she could care less!

Don't get me wrong, the car still sounds awesome, but danm those burbles and pops where over the top, and there is no doubt they are gone in any form as they used to be.

The 2010 original burbles and pops are due to the original ecu's less
conservative fuel map, the software updates alter the fuel maps to
    comply with emission regulations

Most likely it was purposely dumping too much fuel, to give those effects...

I disagree. It is my car, not theirs. If they are going to mess with my car, i at least deserve to be told what they are doing and why. Not just "we had to update your software. We can't tell you why or what it does, but we had to. "

why can't you remove the ecu and tow the car to the dealer to do the service?
assume the service can be done without starting the car?
    hehe.
If I were you, I would remove the ecu right in front of the service guy and say: "if you ever need to start the engine, let me know and i'll be right there installing the ECUs on it so that you can start it"

Sorry about that man. Rest in peace pops and sounds. Mine is an 11 and sounds like a shot guns with sports cat back. I have to make sure tell my dealer no updates!!! That's why I am keeping my 11 even when my 488 comes in. Don't sue, you will never get a new Ferrari again...just my one cent.

Why can't the pops by synthesized by the aftermarket? Seems to me there would be enough demand to support a retrofit...
