You are going slightly too fast, Bas...

The rumor has it that the oil giant from Venezuela, PDVSA, which supports Pastor, has not paid Renault yet of the $ 50 millions scheduled for 2016.

We know that the economic situation in Venezuela today is terrible, as it is totally oil dependent, and the barrel is barely at $30 these days, whereas the country’s budget was built on a $100 per barrel forecast. The new government is trying to change a lot of things, and the support from PDVSA to Maldonado is no longer guaranteed.

A representative for Renault said that: “for the time being, we are continuing with Pastor and Jolyon, but who knows what can happen from today till the Australian Grand Prix”.

Said in other words: “with the $ 50 million cheque for the year, Pastor stays; without it, he won’t”.

Magnussen is rumored to be the preferred replacement.

Actually, that'd be great if Magnussen got a seat. He seems capable and I feel a bit sorry for how things have shaped up for him so far - politics/money has kept him out of a secure race seat rather than a lack of talent.

    All the best,
    Andrew.

Magnussen surely deserves a second chance, but fairness and Formula One do rarely go very well together...

As for Pastor Maldonado, I think he must have no illusions left now:
    - he brings $ 50 millions, fine: he can still play with cars and break one from time to time.
    - he does not bring this money anymore: his Formula One days are over.

All true, and though I didn't read why Maldonado might not get his seat (IIRC it was quite late when I posted), money was one of my assumptions...

That, and his obvious talent of wrecking the **** out of any car he gets near. Last year he didn't crash so often but with this, his speed went down. Lotus obviously was very clear on the ''do not crash this car'' briefing to him. The team already didn't have a packet of crisps between all 200+ people there for the weekend, another written of lotus million euro repair cost claim surely wouldn't help things.

Maldonado is a damn quick guy but he's proven so far that whilst he's quick, he writes cars off about as quickly, and when asked not to crash so often, his speed goes down significantly. Grosjean was the same, got a kick in the nuts and some help from his psychologist, and changed for the better. He's now quick and much less crash prone that before.

In other words, Maldonado has proven he can't be quick without writing of cars right left and center, so what is the point for him to stick around? 50 mil just about covers the bill for the crashes and lost points due to it...So time for a new kid IMO.

I like Magnussen. Would be great to see if he takes the Mclaren's properly. And a zoom in on Ron Dennis' face each time...

Not only is Pastor a disaster as a driver, he has been an outspoken, proud in his own words, supporter of Maduro and Chavez before that. Since PDVSA loses money on every barrel of oil it produces, spending $50mm to increase sales might not be such a good idea. Chavez spent the money to stroke his ego, Maduro is mini-Chavez. The new government is quite likely to move away from anything that smacks of a Chavez/Maduro pet project.

It's all a saga about Venezuelan politics and the extreme need of F1 teams for drivers who come with big cash sponsors. Kind of a sad state of affairs.
