I have a 1988 1/2 Mondial 3.2 coupe which, for those unfamiliar, does not have power steering. I need to remove the steering rack for rebuilding, and I have unbolted everything that attaches to the rack or comes close to it (such as the swaybar). My problem is that the shaft coming out of the steering box is so long that about 4 inches of it protrudes into the driver's footwell, and yes, I have unbolted the steering shaft (the one to which the steering wheel is attached). This makes it impossible to get the rack out of the frame members in the front of the car.
The first photo below shows how much of the shaft protrudes into the cabin. The second photo shows the steering rack pressed as far forward as I can move it in an attempt to wiggle it out of the hole going into the cabin. The third photo depicts a screwdriver pointing out a bellows or rubber cap which covers ... who knows? All I can think of is that this cap covers some attachment point where I can unbolt or otherwise remove the 4 inch shaft which is binding me up, but this is wild speculation.
I have watched a video demonstrating rack removal from a 308, which should be a dead-ringer for a Mondial, but that video showed no such problems. Anyone have an idea?
    Thanks

Now I can't even get the photos to upload. When it rains, it pours I suppose.

Photo # 4 showing the relationship between the rack and the opening into the passenger compartment. (Where the light is coming from)

Sorry; photo # 4 mislabeled; the light is not coming from the passenger compartment. This picture is sideways.

I'll bet you take the boot off and there is a clamp or U-joint there.

You guys were spot-on! Undid the hex bolt and the shaft came out fairly easily. Details & pics to follow.

I liked that picture #4; at first it looked like you captured the bolt (under the screw driver) falling in mid-air.
    Glad you got it out.
There is a guy in Santa Ana who rebuilds them at a good price... he does them for lots of stores; but when I take my stuff here I have him rebuild mine without sandblasting. He looks at me a little funny, but he does it.

Thanks! Is it Ferrari racks he does or is it just steering racks in general?

Reyes does racks in general, but there is likely a lot of commonality for the soft parts anyway. Sorry for the delayed reply.
