We own two Ferraris. One purchased from the dealer and another privately. For the last 8 months, we have told the dealer that we want a 488GTB and have configured one with them. We have been told that we would have it this spring. However, every time I inquiry, I am told that they are waiting for their allocation. I find this very fustrating and last week when on an airplane discussed this with the person sitting next to me who said his experience was similar (in the past) and the car never showed up. He said, Ferrari has special customers and if you are not one, don't expect much. Do others have similar tales or am I just imagining this and the car will come thru?

Where are you located? With one purchase the best bet will be to buy used at a premium and establish a solid relationship

What's the downside of waiting? For the next two years any used ones will bring over list. The dealers don't really know when or how many allocations they will get. Also a better customer may be placed ahead of you. I wouldn't worry about it.

I can confirm that there is no such thing as a "Special" customer.. I know guys that have 10+ new cars from a dealership and get the exact same ****y experience.

Your experience with the California should tell you that patience will pay off - I think you are somewhere in the States and sooner or later your dealer will run out of favored customers and have to start confirming 488s to regular customers - my guess is around early summer when all the favoured customers start specifying and ordering their Spiders - at which point he will also have a supply of low mileage highly priced used 488s

    That's Italy for you!

In the US the dealers do have a small VIP program for celebs and such. But they won't get a car like a TDF.

Also one guy I know had his car destroyed on shipment and they jumped the queue to replace it.

The limited production program is a mystery and frankly an embassment. I understand the problems started with the Barchetta which made a lot of people angry.

    To answer the OP's question

Yes you will get one but allocation is often both the reason you don't know or the excuse to not tell you.

Yes, I don't imagine Eric Clapton or Nick Mason have to wait in line.

I never understood this....there are Ferrari clients that are Billionaires. They could actually buy Ferrari and sell it for scraps. What is more VIP than that, a guy that can sing or play a guitar? Ridiculous I mean im actually pretty good at eating chocolate mouse but managing a billion dollar company hmmm not so much....

What's better for your brand image, a guy you've never heard of with an accounting degree, or the guy who wrote Layla? Plus, most of the billionaires will be on the 'list' too.

I am in the Miami area. I bought a used California and new 458 spider as well as 8 other luxury cars from same dealer over past 6 years. Still waiting for allocation. One thing for sure, I will not take one towards end of its production year and be behind on depreciation curve again. May have to take a look at the new mclaren 570s spider or the Huracan LPL 2

...or Lambos. I got out of mine in time, but have friends that paid $285 for 610-4 and sold 8 months later for $230's...that will wake up your bank account. Nothing like a $55k hit year one. Then again Mac would have been $100k, so all in perspective :D

I was considering trading up from my 2014 458 spider to a new 2015 458 spider about 4 months ago. My car had 4000 miles and msrp of 328k. I was offered 260k on trade. That would have been a 68k hit in 1 year. With Mac and Lamborghini, you just take discount up front to offset the depreciation. My other reason for not accepting an allocation at end of model run would be not to buy a care just being replaced (especially paying full msrp)

True, I tried to get 610-4 on the west for 207k. Dealer said they couldn't go cz that was the "trade in/wholesale" price on that 277k msrp car with under 3,000 miles. Some 650s have traded in for 215k, 340k msrp.

Short answer is not likely based on what you have described. Of course you can always buy used in the first couple years at a premium (30-50k over MSRP) if you really want one.

I'm in a similar position to the OP, but I'm simply trying to be patient. In the meantime, I have the terrific 458 Italia that I bought new from the dealership a few years ago so I'm happy while I'm waiting.
