They will made good progress next year but i bet their main problem will be reliability ..
The trick to any engineering solution is know what the problem is and the cause. McLaren and Honda identified very early on in the season what the problems are, but due to the lack of testing and "tokens", they made a few changes but this was mostly for reliability. They had to run the engines "turned down" or they would go kerblamo. They also knew right from the off that they had a deficit of at least 220hp. Don't know if they've made all that up, but don't forget this isn't an " over the winter" progress, they had the new ICE on the dyno back in June sometime, but couldn't test it in the car ( no testing) or race it (not enough development tokens), all though they were able to get some of it on the car mid season.
Is it though? Okay, the 233hp figure might not be totally accurate, but Honda have been massively down on power compared to Mercedes and Ferrari last season due to trying to be too clever for their own good, so by going back to a more basic set up (similar to that used by Mercedes and Ferrari), they could easily claw back a huge chunk of that power and get a lot closer to the leading two teams. As I see it, McLaren and Honda made a big mistake coming into last season by making irresponsible power and performance claims before they'd even bolted the engine into the chassis, and that bit them in the arse big time! Now Honda are desperate to downplay expectations for this season - Just in case, so of course they're going to deny the accuracy of this story, but unless they haven't learnt a single thing from the 2015 season, they have to have made big gains in power.
Does the token system allow the sort of total redesign that would lead to a 25-30% increase in power?
*If* you get it right, I believe 'yeah'. They've got plenty of tokens right now, but they better spend them wisely..... Cheers, Ian
Ron has managed fairly steady progress in that direction since he took over again from MW. Why would anyone think it would change now
+1 May have noted before, he once saved my ass while warming up a lump; wasn't seeing any rise on the gauge. He wanders into the garage & tells me "the bung is still in the hose, right here....." And points to the spot. Shut it down, disconnected & sure as hell, out came a ~3" orange bung. Thanks Ron! OTOH, many claim he's a lunatic. I think we're pretty sure he's a little 'anal', but I've never worked for the guy...... Cheers, Ian
An analysis of the major issues Honda faced after the 2015 season. Analysis: The tech changes that give Honda confidence for 2016
Precisely. Doing nothing with regards to increase power but plainly getting their old (2015) PU to work properly will lead to such a jump. Apparently Honda have made such fools of themselves that Fchat can't stop laughing and doesn't put 1 + 1 together. Then on top of getting their concept to work is further development, also leading to increased power. If they wouldn't have hope for their concept, they'd have canned it.
Honda should have just said from the start that they were going to use 2015 as a development year rather than making these foolish predictions. F1 is SOOO technical nowadays no matter how much brain power and money you throw at it it just can't be competitive in year 1. I truly hope they can figure it all out for the sake of the sport!!
Hmmmm...I guess I would have to say GEE PEE TWO ENGINE! GEE PEE TWO ENGINE!! Seriously, I hope they get better to improve the competition.
