488 vs 288

I know the GTO has its own forum, but - given the body is essentially the same as the 3x8 - thought this article might be of interest to some on this forum:

I actually liked the 911 graphic near the bottom - drew my attention.

 

They should take the airbrush away from the moron who thought he could improve the pictures.

 

Oh man do I love the 288. Probably silly with all sorts of consequences, but if I had to choose (and had the money)...

 

The 488 is stellar but the 288 is IMO one of the most beautiful, enduring designs of all time. It has been one of my top 5 since the day I first saw one and probably the main reason why I fell in love and bought a 308 GTB.

 

Give me a choice and I will take the 288 GTO over the 488 any day of the week. Christie Brinkley beats "what's her name?" of the week.

I will also take the F40 over that La Ferrari thing too.

 

No question and it is one of the best driving sports cars ever made. If given 1 Ferrari, any Ferrari, make it a 288.

 

Totally concur with the 288 as the #1 choice and it would be the only Ferrari I would take over my 328...and I'd take it, of course, in an instant.

 

Gotta go find that $1M.... I did not win the big $1.5B prize the last time I played.
The 288 is so rare I have NEVER seen one in person. I have seen Enzos, F40, F50 in person, but NEVER a live 288 GTO.

 

Nor have I.

The closest I can come is to buy one on Xbox / Forza. Probably a good thing in the long run.

There are at least 2 of them not far from you. One of them retired a few years ago but I used to see him commuting in it. He is a regular at the shows but has several cars so you never know which he will bring. A couple of years ago when the FCA had the National Meet in Palm Desert he drove it down. He posts here from time to time.

First video - can't deal with the imbalance of fire from only one exhaust. Also, God save us from all the pollution resulting from that display!


Second video - love it! I love seeing people actually driving the piss out of these cars instead of treating them like they were some sort of precious and fragile relics. I light up the rear tires on my 328 fairly regularly. If I didn't, it would just be a boring, old farts car.

Agreed with both of you guys. Gorgeous pics, looks to be near Maranello.

 

There's a collector here in Pittsburgh that has a 288. He has lots of great cars (including a F-40 and Lusso) but the 288 outclasses all of them.

 

By comparison, the 488 looks quite MR2'ish, especially from the side.

I was very fortunate to spend some 288 wheel time in the 90's. Astonishing acknowledgement from the public, and was more road friendly and usable on the bumpy British roads than the F40.

288 is definitely in my Top 3

 

I even like more my drysump than a 488. The 288 GTO is just a tuned and turbocharged 308. I like the 288, it's rare and precious, but the 208 turbo is almost as rare as it and much more elegant and with a pure shape not destroyed by widened fenders. You must be honest: The 288 GTO looks like a German tuned 308.
The best shape of the family is th 208 GTB turbo one.

I really don't like the 288, but I like the 488 even less: Imho the 488 is one of the worst looking Ferrari ever

This talking just about car looking and not about any other car aspect.

 

The 488 looks like it was carved out of clay with a paring knife. If this is the new Italian art, well I'm just not buying into it.

I don't agree with that at all. There's no way you could just tune and turbocharge a 308 and then have the performance equivalent of a 288 GTO - for more than a couple of minutes until it blew up. It's really not the same car/engine at all. Just about everything that matters is different. Yes, the general body shape and interior are similar but really almost nothing performance-related is the same. The 288 was conceived/built as a race car; the 308 was conceived/built as a road car.

 

Agree. Maybe I didn't explain enough that my opinion is just about the car look.

From the outside I don't like at all how the 288 looks: It looks like a German tuned 308, the Italian beauty of 308 line is almost killed. As performances and under the body, it's another car. In my opinion it's the worst looking (maybe better saying "the less good looking") of the 3x8 series.

The 488 shape, in my opinion, it's just a disaster: I wish it looked like a 288 GTO
