Hello all, I could use your help. I recently bought a Black/Red 79 308 GTS. It is a good car, great history, documented, 36k miles. I have sent it to CAROBU for a top to bottom and front to back mechanical restoration to include a 3.5 engine rebuild and their adjustable suspension set up as well as larger brakes. In addition we will be performing a sympathetic interior refresh where needed and a complete windows out repaint. This is my personal car and my goal is to have a superb driver and event car. The car currently has euro bumpers so I intend to continue with that direction by cleaning up the US side markers. I would LOVE to find a correct set of the optional 16" magnesium wheels available in 79 as an option. Any help or leads would be greatly appreciated. Reconditioning needs are fine. Also willing to pay a finders success fee. Thanks much! Jason [email protected]

    Good luck... ;)

that ones on Ebay are just aluminum copies, no magnesium wheels. A good magnesium 16" OEM complete set would probably cost 5-6 k or even more.

I have just one Cromodora (a front rim) 16" original and restored. There were two suppliers, Campagnolo and Cromodora. Maybe the early cars like your one had Campagnolo-Tecnomagnesio, but I'm not sure. I think that starting from 1981 they had 16" Cromodora rims as option, I don't know before.

    ciao

About all of us want those wheels. Finding them is very tough... And when you do, prepare to pay big $$$$ for them. I went w the superformance repros to replace my TRX and I love them. About to order a second set (in gold this time).

    My '79 308GTS was built November 1979 chasis # 30209.
About 10 years ago one of my friends with an '85 308GTS wanted chrome wheels, so he sold me his 16" originals. I couldn't believe the improvement in handling going from 14" to 16", and the profile looks even better. No problems at all with the difference in offset.

I appreciate the feedback! I'm strongly considering gold! I think that contrast with the Black and Red would look cool!

I gave up on this quest long ago. I also have a '79 GTS in Nero with Rosso interior. I keep my eyes open for 16" wheels but so have not had the luck to find them.

I do run 16" wheels but they are period correct BBS RS1s. They are a stronger wheel than the factory wheels and they are gold basket weave. This may meet your needs.

Considering you're modding your car anyway (and very well I think), repro euro bumpers, repro euro side markers, etc, why even bother looking for original 16" wheels? The repros from the UK are a phenomenal value and way "close enough" for what you are building. It's not like putting $5000 original wheels on your car will somehow make it less modified. Or is it that some magnesium content has special appeal because of weight?

I appreciate your feedback and certainly consider repros to be a good option for the car. I like the idea of the lighter weight wheels and hence the correct magnesium wheels are Plan A. After seeing those pics I'm SOLD on GOLD;-)

Eurospares asked me 6k euro + shipping for the 16" set and they had to be repaired and repainted too... The final cost would have been something like 9 k euro, 10 k USD more or less. Then you stil need a repro copy as they are so precious you would like to save them...

    Ciao

Still hunting if anyone has any for sale or could help me with leads? If I don't go the magnesium route I'd welcome suggestions for the best quality replicas. Thanks in advance for any help!

I think that unless you are going for 100% authenticity with a restoration of a UK steel carb dry sump car, for example, i don't really see why you wouldn't just opt for the Superperformance UK replica wheels .... OK, not magnesium, but if you just want the look, i bet 90% of the Ferrari community would not know the difference at 5 paces!!
About £1600 including Pirelli P7's ....... bit of a no brainer, really if you just want to drive rather than just show.

i fully agree. But the same can be said about the tools, the jack, etc. Some people just want to have it as original as possible, some follow a more practical route.

Love the wheels, I wonder if they narrowed the rears on the inside or if they relocated the upper shock mounts. I had to move the shock mounts to fit a set of stock 360 wheels on a 308 but then they fit, look fat and tuck in without modifying the body.
