it would have to beat it's way out of the bell housing, but yes.....looked painful. I ran the Texas Mile in my car...bone stock. Eye opening day!!
Cast aluminum bells are NO match for flywheel disintegrating at 7-8K RPM. That's why they came up with stamped heavy steel scatter shields for racing purposes. Doug http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m79/kiwikevinp/scans/scan0100-1.jpg
Do you know of any documented cases of the 308/328 flywheels letting go? I have never heard of any to date. If it's still cracked after a reface then replace it, just depends on the cracks really.
There is some encouragement for a do it yourselfer, "leave it for someone who has a clue" How about we encourage DIY folks with advice and help, I'm sure you have plenty of business.
Well, at the end of the day, I was glad to find out my internals didn't look much worse than the next guy's, in terms of filth. In a long string of other technical failures I'm just discovering from the previous owner/shadetree mechanic, I may have over-reacted to the oily mess. UNFORTUNATELY (and I'm assuming my four drives for less than 30mi didn't do all this), the flywheel is NOT salvageable. I sent it to a highly recommended clutch specialist, and they reported back today that the stress cracks run too deep for reuse. Looks like I need to source a flywheel, and Ferrparts, Ricambi and Rutlands are out. Superformance has one for about $1350, and eBay has a GT4 one for $$$. Thoughts? I'd like to keep the stock "feel" and streetability, so I'm concerned about these aftermarket lightweight options.
Rightly so, as a lightweight one will reduce drivability in a big way, IMO. They are all out "right now" but the next car to burn will be a donor... The GT4 is the same engine, but you really want a lightly used GTS one as I previously stated
I noticed that one from mr fiat, but it looks "off," unless that's a universal file photo. Appears different from the more-expensive superformance one. Anyone know who produces them, and if one is any better than the other?
I looked at a salvage 308 several years ago that had flywheel let go. Shattered the bell housing, deck lid and fuel tank causing a fire that destroyed much of the car. The flywheel incident happened in the hands of a transporter and "the engine was only idling"
That appears to be a stock flywheel but you need to transfer the ring gear. That is is also a flywheel for an i car. The only real difference is i cars have two extra holes drilled for pickup magnets.
Stay away from light weight flywheels. Their only use in a car like this is road racing, they can be a ***** on the street starting off, with a small motor like the 3x8. Doug
Tex - Thanks SO much for the offer. MNExotics found one as well and made me a nice deal. I notice he also asked me yesterday how progress is going, so I'll report that I still need to get the alternator and front header out before I clean up the engine bay and start fixing and restoring parts to put back on. The clutch probably isn't going in for a while, but it looks like I'm in good shape for when I'm ready. Thanks to everyone!
I haven't seen one that low in price for about 7 years now and that was before the prices started moving. Not saying one couldn't be bought privately but that's a rare find at that price. Off subject but I am planning on a Houston trip to see family and friends later this year. If your available I would like to meet up with you while I am down there.
I hear you,,once upon a time you could trawl through Ebay and pick up cheap enough parts for a 328 with the exception of the Fog lights, they've always demanded a kings ransom.. I, like many here have resorted to removing the jack and tool kit out of the car and substituting it with a cheaper and arguably "better" set of them both.. Once upon a time thieves would jack the stereo out of your car, nowdays the tools, jack and emergency light are the things to steal..
Do yourself a favor when you get the alternator out and take it to a rebuild shop and have them replace the bearings and brushes. Or do it yourself, it isn't difficult. As much of a PITA it is to get it in and out, do it now while its out. Doug
Sending it to our forum's very own in-house Bosch man, none other than one MNExotics. FWIW, I shopped this piece across the world, and his was half the cost of NOS, delivered resurfaced and balanced. I'm more than pleased with the deal.
