I know there have been several threads about this subject over the years, but it’s been a while and I’m hopeful there are new solutions available. Take a look at my pics and you can see that the plastic arm at the base of the turn signal stalk has broken off at the point indicated by the red arrow in the first image. The second image shows the parts that fell out of the mechanism when I pulled it off the steering wheel shaft. These parts include the broken switch arm, the brass contact and a ball bearing. Three questions:

    1. How do I disassemble the mechanism in order to remove the turn signal stalk?
    2. Is there a replacement plastic arm available on the market or can I glue the broken arm back together? If so, what type of adhesive do you recommend I use so that it doesn’t break again. You will note that the head light stalk is ready to break (indicated by blue arrow), so I will need to glue that together too.
    3. Where does that ball bearing go? Is it possible to insert it back in its proper place without disassembling the switch mechanism?

I have seen plenty of posts that refer people to Verell when they have had similar problems. So if you’re out there Verell, please let me know if you are still working on these things.

By the way, in order to remove the steering wheel and access the switch mechanism, I used a Dremel Tool to fashion a special castellated socket out of a standard 1-3/16 inch socket (see pic #3). You will notice that I had to grind away some of the internal circumference of the wall of the socket in order for it to fit over the unique shape of the top of the steering wheel nut. I loosened the steering wheel nut using a 1 inch socket placed on the top edge of the steering wheel nut and rapping on it several times with a small hammer. The nut came off with a decent bit of force using my special socket and a breaker bar. I then removed the steering wheel from its mounting collar. Use a hex socket and not an allen wrench on those little screws and tap the hex socket into the screw head first using a small hammer so that it seats tightly! To remove the steering wheel mounting collar from the threaded steering shaft I rapped on the top of the shaft with a hammer as I applied upward force on the steering wheel collar, careful not to hit any of the shaft thread. The steering wheel collar came off relatively easily this way and I didn’t have to use a puller. The collar and shaft are not a beveled fit but they were stuck together very tightly. I probably didn’t need to remove the steering wheel from the collar, but it made it easier to hit the shaft end with a small hammer with the wheel out of the way.

Thanks for your help and I hope I am paying forward to someone else through my little experience.

He will mold a new end on the shaft. There really is no glue or adhesive that provides a permanent and firm fix. Essentially, the plastic shrinks and cracks because of the shaft inside, which obviously doesn't shrink. Even if you did glue it, the shaft eventually works loose from the plastic pivot and the contact end is not precise in its motion.
