930 3.0 vs 3.3?

I agree, pointless to have a slant nose without the headlights in the spoiler like in a real 935...

I have a 3.0 from '77, and I have to add the early ones are simply the first ones, completely different car to drive to a 3.3 (I drove 3.3's from 89 as well).

Brakes are scarily underdimensioned in a 3.0, the turbo lag is exciting (needs good timing to boost, to not fall victim to the widowmaker), very reliable when setup well and in 77 with corrosion protection there's no real aging problems. But it needs to be really really well maintained.

That said there are plenty parts no longer available (at least here with Porsche in Germany), and a few things to attend to if you get a Turbo Carrera (as in US version 3.0 Turbo) like removing the thermal reactors, but other than that they are not only more expensive, but also much harder to find.. so obviously a colectors choice.

And to add to the myth: The fenders were handmade, like on RSR's, 934's and all the Carrera's in Le Mans '75, which to me really adds to the race pedigree - from '78 onwards they were pressed like all other parts.

All 3.3 930's until 1986 also had the handmade welded fenders. All 3.0 and 3.3 930's had handcrafted modifications in the front pan that further differentiated the Type 930.

I have read different, but - Never cease to learn..

 

Had both 3.3 and 3.0 930's with a 3.0 currently being restored. Both great in there own ways. The 3.0 car might not have the brakes (911S brakes-not SC as stated) but it has the short bell house tranny (more desirable), the very rare 3.0 case (6 bolt) so either a 70.4 or 66 crank (read short stroke), motor sits further forward on the 3.0 car and lighter in weight. These differences make a properly set up 3.0 feel like an earlier 911, lighter on its feet and revier than a 3.3 car.

 

Also 75-77 930 for the tilt out rear quarter windows. The better 78 -79 brakes and 98MM P & C and shorty tube headers ( US cars instead of the dreaded thermal reactors )among other things can be snuck in if you like improved performance. Most easily reversible.

 

yes... you can tell by the rockers. 86 rockers closes out half of the torsion bar access holes on the stamped fenders while the 85 and earlier cars are welded on full keeping the full circle.

So i always liked the looks of the 930 and after getting my first 911 a couple of years ago I bought a very nice 24000 mile 86 930 now this car was perfect ran great looked great everything worked then one day i came up with this idea I should sell it which i did .... SO the story should end there but after going to the Scottsdale auctions in January and finding my self drawn to EVERY 930 i saw ... I came back and bought my old car back ...waiting on it to arrive from its round trip to california and back.... THing is the 930 is just a great car to drive something special when that turbo kick in just really cool...
SO thats the story of my 930 ...
