355 track question

    I am still looking for the right 355 and was rereading an old R&T article called the "battle of the brands". In this article they compared two different cars from ferrari, bmw, porsche, mercedes and honda around the 2.87mile road course at Thunderhill. They had Steve Millen drive all the cars so driver input would be consistent. For ferrari they had a 360 and a 550. The ferraris had the two fastest times of the day (incl the porsche turbo). What I am wondering is if any of the track hounds could offer input on what kind of times a 355 would put down if the 360 ran 2 miin 7.65 and the 550 ran 2 min. 9.25. thanks, John

    The lap times from that story seem to me a little bit inconsistent making me wonder how much time he had to get the most out of each car. For example, I could get very close to Millen's best 996 TT time in my non-turbo 996, which made me feel pretty good, BUT, I have have only gotten within 1.5 seconds of his best 360 time. I suppose that maybe I stay a bit further from the limit in the 360.

    Anyway to answer your question, I think a 355 would be about 2 seconds back... If you are under 2:15 you are driving very well and if you are getting close to 2:10 in a street car, you are going truely fast at Thunderhill.

    Docapl, are you saying that the 355 time would be 2 seconds behind the 360?

    These tests were run in late 2000.

    Note: just a guess:

    At TWS an F360 is supposed to be about 5 seconds per lap faster than an F355 both manual or both F1. TWS is about 2:05 in my F355 on street tires, and is a 2.9 mile road course, so the times and environment should be comparable.

    So, I guess a F355 should be right at 2:12-2:13 on the same tires.

    Mitch, thanks, thats the kind of info I was looking for. I remember seeing a chart of time from the Ring but have not been able to locate. Any one else have a chart of track times on the same track for various cars?

    I should note, that I chase down and pass many 360 at TWS in my lowly 95 F355 on S03s, some on r-compounds, some on slicks, some with F1. I also get my doors blown off when a well driven 360 gets on the track.

    Yes, given the same driver and comfort level with the cars. As others have pointed out though, the driver is going to be a much bigger variable than the car.

    I would put this differently.

    Z06 is quicker than the 550, however, the 550 has a faster top end.

    What about the mods that I suppose are on the Z06 (compared to C5, right?). Must be a lot since C5s should not be that fast around a track.

    That was done at Thunderhill, a track in Northern California We run 1:57s on the Suzuki there. However, I would suspect that a 355 (I own one) would be about 2, 3 seconds slower than the 360 in the right hands. The 355 would be more difficult to get a good time in, because of the lack (in comparison to the 360) of low end torque, requiring more shifting.

    That track requires much more driving ability.

    Art, yes it is a really nice track, imo. Other times I am aware of that are quite fast on this track are
    dodge viper 2:02
    mosler 2:02
    ZR1 2:07
    and a guy in a set up e46 m3 that went 2:05
    So either Steve did not have much time in the cars, was not willing to take them to the edge or some other factor. Sounds to me like he was running at 95% which given the nature of the story, makes sense. BTW, the viper time was put down by Paul Mumford, the guy who won Laguna Seca from the big factory teams last year before his untimely death in a plane crash.
