This could be a fake ploy on Ferrari's part. I am not 100% sure but i dont even think that these wings are FIA legal. On top of that they dont look like they will create that much down force and might even upset airflow to the rear wing itself.

Here is a couple more shots of the "Cowl Wing Thing"

The model builders and collectors are going to go nuts over this......here we are a week or so away form race # 1, and we already have 2 different versions of the car...how many by year's end..??..(I predict Mattel will have record Ferrai F1 sales this year.....)

Every year that constantly develop the cars, and make sometimes huge aero changes. They also have different aero packages for different types of tracks ... thus what do the model makers sell?, the car half way through the season?

Have you considered that the little winglettes are only there to steer air towards the rear wing? and not generate downforce all by themselves.

    Mitch,

I seriously dout that they are used for directing air toward the rear wing. take a close look at the camber on them they are true airfoils mounted upside down. they are there to produce down force albe it very little in the overall scope of the chassis design.

It may be the difference of staying on the track.

Mitch, I think you are right, they are for managing the airflow. Just about everything you see on top of the car (with the obvious exception of the wings) is for that purpose.
