I'm just reassembling my Rear Hub Carriers & I need the experience and advice of the forum...

The bearings were checked & they were fine.I pressed in the draft shaft back in, slid on a new rubber seal and the dropped down the flange (Picture #1). The hub carrier rotates smoothly on the shaft.

But when I tighten down the flange with a spanner (Picture #2) everything starts to feel a bit stiff, the shaft does rotate but it takes some effort.

The third picture shows the spacer and the nut. This nut needs to be torqued down to some silly number.

    Am I missing something here?
Obviously the engine would overcome this resistance as it stands but when the nut is torqued down, if I have got something wrong it could be solid.

I've just studied the photo's again and I think I've pushed the seal in where the shaft should go.

Agree - I don't think rubber seal goes on splines.

    Andy,

sorry to say that. But the rubber seal is wrongly installed. The seat on the flange on the last two pictures is correct, but the thin lip has to go towards the upright.
You won't do much damage, except, that this, what you now feel now, is the increased friction of the seal. Probably it would melt getting useless. Anyway, the earliest 308 (GT4) didn't have this seal at all.
But without kidding. Reverse this seal and I'm sure it will turn smoother.

    Best Regards
    Martin

As stated is wrong way round. Should be fine when changed. I would tighten up when installed and back off then re righted to torque checking rotation friction as you go.

Thanks very Martin & Gavin - you're help and advice is always appreciated and valued!

I had taken photos of these seals when I disassembled the hubs. But they were filthy and had started to disintegrate - so the pictures were of little help.

I swapped them around and it all now looks and feels correct. The shaft kind of snaps into place as the seal settles in place. The photos tell the story...

    :D
I have to say the quality of the pictures surprised me, taken on my phone (Sony Z3).

This job would have been impossible for someone with my limited experience without the internet. Not just the advice on this forum but for locating parts, general instructional videos on YouTube and the confidence that comes from seeing how many other amateurs are taking on these jobs.
