I'm considering the purchase of a friend's 308 GTSi with 125,000 miles on it. The car is in nice shape and has had a recent major service done. I don't have the receipts at hand, but it had both the engine and transmission rebuilt at around 90K. Also, it just had an engine out service that included SS exhaust valves, belts and water pump. It's a California car with no accident history or rust. The paint and interior are both driver quality. Not great, but not bad. It comes with a new set of repro 16" wheels. Can anyone advise me as to what the market value is. I've never seen one with so many miles. I'll try to find some decent pictures to post. Thanks in advance. Mark

    lots of miles
Although I would take into account the mileage, the history and maintenance are more important.
    What year is the 308?
1983/4/5 are worth more than 1980-82

The reality of it is this is a 35,000 mile 308 with no sodium valve concern and a fresh comprehensive service.

All I can say is that it is likely worth quite a bit more than my '81 GTSi with 87,000 miles on its original (never rebuilt) engine and transmission and sitting on its original TRX wheels ! :)

Yes, and an odometer that you never need to worry about. I like that.

I would price it based on the paint and body -- 125K miles is a lot of wear on a paint job (and interior). I would be interested in the $40Ks, but only because I would budget in a professional quality respray and interior if they are as tired as the mileage would suggest.

It's hard to tell too much from just a few photos and without a lot of close ups and not being able to see the underbody, suspension, etc.

But, overall, from a distance, the cosmetics do not look terrible. The paint looks fairly good (it may even have already had a respray ?). But, if it's original paint, it reflects a car that has been cared for.

However, I do see a few rust bubbles in at least 2 areas so.......if it was resprayed, it was a low budget job (because they did not address the rust areas).

That said, I think I would be in agreement with Bullfighter on an offer price ---- no more than mid-40's.

Plenty of 308s on the market to choose from ---- if you can't get a good deal on this one..... find another one on which you can.

    It's an 80 model.

Interesting that the taillights are swapped differently in two pictures (the red should be on the inside)

Yes. As far as I know only the 1980 model had the clock cluster facing front to back instead of side to side.

Thing is, many 308s have 125,000 miles on them. Lots of the ones with 23,000 miles on the odometer do too. So to drive a 308 with that many miles is no different then any other average one. With a solid work history including replacing sodium valves it should be worth owning. You'll always pay less, AND sell for less a car known to have that many miles. Look for deeper rust than just the bubbles; reason for low price may be because of it. Figure a $12,000 proper repaint and a 45,000 purchase price. Has you at just under 60k. What Is a lower mileage 1980 with no rust and a nice paint job worth, maybe 75-80? Seems it'd be better to spend the extra and get one already sorted with the exterior taken car of. If you just want to own a 308 that's been sorted, still looks good and is fun as hell to drive then yeah, jump on it at 45K (or so).

What are the distinguishing characteristics identifying it as a 1980 model? I wasn't too sure on the exact year and I'm certainly not an expert on the differences between the 80-82 years.

I think my friend swapped the lights around; preferring the red ones towards the center. Some of the pictures are from prior to him buying the car.

The clock cluster must be the dead give-away. I wasn't paying attention...
I restore Italian cars, so this would be a walk in the park to make nice (I'm not interested in making it a queen).

For sure the driver side door hinges are dead. Also make sure to replace the outside mirrors. They make the car look neglected.

Vitaloni California mirrors come with it. Door hinges, apparently are the same as Fiat 850 Spiders I've previously rebuilt.

For reference, I'm getting a one owner 28k mile reasonably and recently serviced 82 GTSi for $39k. Mine has rust on rear driver quarter panel that is being fixed and resprayed for that price.

Finally a group of guys that see the non-monetary value of a good running mechanically sound 308.

They don't have to be a 98 point concours example to own drive and just enjoy.

Given today's market - I think this car is probably at retail a $35K -$40K car. auction about $25-$30K.

I'm not a fan of the Nardi Steering wheel... but this could be a great drivers car. interior needs a solid clean ... remove seats and door cards ( probably lube windows at same time) need to check for rust as a 1980 did not have any or very little rust protection. Zincrox came out in 83.

good compression? no sagging or groaning suspension? all the gears work.. good car.

308's when taken care of are remarkably solid cars...
