Speciale or 16M or RS 4.0?

Hello guys,

I am looking to add a further modern emotional sports car to my collection.

I want to enjoy the car on several sunny weekends and I don´t want to loose money with it.

Of course I would appreciate if it would be also a good investment.

I am thinking of a GT3 RS 4.0 below 500 miles, a Ferrari 458 Speciale below 500 miles and a Ferrari 16M with 2500 miles. All are roughly the same price.

What´s your opinion?

Well, the most special to drive is the... Speciale.

 

Just corrected your mistake.

Seriously they are all great and as cars to excite they are all superb. The newer cars are clearly going to be faster on track but on road nothing to choose.
Lower volume is likely to hold better on the used market.

Haven't driven a RS 4.0 nor a 16M. But I own a Speciale and have other toys such as an F50, F40 and 599 GTO. The Speciale is probably the fastest most agile car I've ever driven. Mine is in TDF with white stripes, she's damn pretty too. The Speciale is extraordinarily good.

 

If you let us know your existing collection, we would be better able to help you!

 

If you buy at the current market price for these 3, you are likely to lose money. If you don't want to lose, order a 991.2 GT3 RS from dealer, get the msrp price. That way MAYBE you won't lose money. But if money is not the point, Speciale is the definitely the best. 16M has nothing special at all (what makes everything special now is because 488 is turbocharged). Better get a 458spider than 16M. And any 911 is so ugly IMO, but I still order one. LOL.

 

Most limited than the 4.0 RS in comparison with the other two there isn't. I would go for the RS. The last of the manuals.

 

Since you are looking at ultra low mileage cars surely much of their value is dependent on their not being used and as such does it really matter which is the better car ? About the only two criteria then become ego-gratification or how much will it appreciate and as everyone knows markets only ever go up.....

Not much reason to buy a sub 500 mile car if you are going to drive it. Since it's an emotional car, which one do you want the most? There's your answer.

 

If you are going to drive these cars frequently, you will likely lose money. Nonetheless the best option would be a gt3 RS at msrp if you are worried about value

 

Now that's a nice dilemma!

16m will likely be the most valuable in 10+ years time.

4.0 is just sex...I love this car very much.

Speciale. I'll take mine in yellow, please.

But one of those 3? Go drive them all, and decide which one you love the most.

 

+1. Haven't driven the Speziale but I'd prefer a 16M over the RS anytime. I've driven the 16M with top down on Spa Francorchamps and it's simply epic. I think it has the perfect gear shifts. Better than a manual and those slower F1 systems of the 360/430 series, and more feeling than the DCT / PDK variants. Though not without troubles. Speziale is of course newer and more reliable and much faster. I'm told it's very good. But you'd really need to drive it. I find the Speziale also the most beautiful of the three, by far.

Thumbs up to camlet1 for owning all those cars. I'd be downshifting that 599GTO in a tunnel every day

 

Really depends on what ticks your emotions - is it the physicality of the driving experience, outright speed, noise etc?

I have a 997.2 GT3 RS and a Speciale. There is a lot of joy driving the RS at a moderate pace and trying to master its nuances - perfecting your heel and toe downshifts with the featherweight flywheel, learning to work the weight transfer to get the nose tucked in at corner entry, and of course, enjoying the nicely weighted steering. It is very much an analogue car, and for me at least, more 'emotional' than the Speciale when you are not driving anywhere near the limit over a sunny weekend.

Having said that, I do love both and have no plans to sell either

 

I own a speciale and have driven all three. speciale hands down for me. Porsche looks like they are going to keep making manuals hence the 911R. Regarding holding value, who knows. No real numbers on Speciale published. you hear from 3000 to 1000 made. In the long run I dont see Ferrari going back to NA V8 so Speciale is last, highest HP V8 and is a work of art. If you drive all three you should be able to make a choice.

 

I own a Speciale and 16M. From a driving experience standpoint, not much compares with the Speciale, but the 16M is incredible in its own right and IMHO probably the most likely to further appreciate in the near future.

 

Porsche is making the new gen gt3 with a manual option....and it will not have any form of forced induction. Meaning that the 997 GT Porsches were not the last of the manual Porsches. MANY people think that the 997 GTs will increase in value because they were the last of the manuals. Maybe not so. Google for more info..

There is also no reason to believe that all 3 of your options won't lose value. The current car market isn't long for this world.

I had a 997.2 RS. Great fun car, but nothing like a Ferrari. The Porsche checked 10 boxes while the Ferrari checked 30...if that makes any sense. Take the top down on a 458 Spider, find a country road...dream machine.

(The modern car that may become a long term buy & hold: Alfa 4c.)

Of these three, I'd say Speciale. While the 16M is a great, limited Fcar...the Speciale Aperta is an improved model also limited edition and the last of the V8 NA engines so it's value would seem to always be higher based on those factors alone (all conjecture). The Speciale while a coupe is also the last of the coupe V8's, so of the three might retain better value. If you want to hedge your bets, I'd say add the 458SA instead of the three that you mentioned.

 

The 4.0 has appreciated massively if I'm not mistaken.

 

I see 16Ms on the market at $299K not sure you can pick up a Speciale at the price. I've driven a Scud and own a Speciale. Nothing on the road today compares to a Speciale.

Value wise, I believe all these cars will be under sticker in the next 2 years.. who knows when they might appreciate above sticker in the future.. maybe 10 years?

None of those cars are good investments especially at the price you will have to pay to get them. If you bought them at msrp..okay, you may have a point.

 

+1. Missed the time to get into them at good price. I would choose speciale over the others.
