Hi would anyone on here know if it's possible to re-dye car carpet? My interior is all black. Quite dull really. I'd like a tan colour. Short of having a carpet set made up, Re-dying mine, which is fine apart from being black seems like an alternative if it can be done.

Is there any help with this?

    Thanks

IMO going for a full on color change would be too much effort with questionable long term results that it makes sense to just buy/make and install a new set in the color you want. Re-dying same or similar color is worth the effort IMO.

you cant dye carpets lighter colour, only a darker colour, you can re-colour leather, its possible to colour lighter but it will be a finish that sits on the surface as opposed to really linking to the leather if going darker. quality of finish is never going to be factory , it will devalue your car IMOI,

if its a must, watch ebay etc for a complete interior, sell yours to fund the new interior.

    regards

I've known a few used car dealers that would spray paint it.

There are products for this but they are in effect paints (SEM) and they do leave the carpet feeling stiffer. I used it on the rear cargo area of my Suburban after some water and mold damage and it worked well. But I have a full time rubber pad over that area anyway. I wasn't trying to change the color either.

    Get new carpet made IMHO.

I gave a ride home to my house painter one day and he had a leaky jug of Clorox in his canvas work bag which he set on the floor of our family van. By the time we realized it and got it hosed out, my grey carpet was almost white in spots. I ordered the liquid carpet dye in two colors because I did not know which would match better. DK was kind enough to accept the other bottle back for full credit. It took a couple of applications but it looks almost as good as before. To replace the entire molded in carpet set was over $500 and would have required removing the seats. $12 saved the day.

If you are in need of new carpets due to wear and tear or just a color change (which was my situation).....I would not paint/dye the carpets but purchase new carpets.

Sort of ... but with a happy ending. I bought a 1986 Carrera Cabriolet last September and I've been sorting it out ever since. The interior was probably 8/10 with the exception of the carpeting on the backs of the fold down rear seats which were decidedly sun faded and splotchy. The professional shop I had touch up the leather wouldn't touch the carpet so I went on line and found my way via the Porsche message boards to Leather Magic who make carpet dyes that are code-specific or custom mixed based on a sample. Several days spent slowly and carefully building it up one layer at a time and blending it but I'm totally jazzed with the results - it took 20 years off the car.

Is there a recommendation for a spray bottle that does the job best? I’ve got a good color match and a liquid dye, but not sure about application?

You can not dye with a lasting finish, some carpets. Strangely enough it is usually the very good quality carpets that it is not worth trying to re-dye.
Take your carpet to an expert to get an opinion.
Personally may be better off getting new carpet.

FWIW my 1982 carpet was re dyed using RIT Tan dye. Mixed it in a spray bottle. Sprayed and brushed it in to achieve the depth of color needed. Carpet was not removed and dyed in place. Very happy still after several years as a daily driver. Also did the car mats at the same time. Some folks should not work on cars or anything and others have talent.
