1971 DBS V8 LHD I'm looking for a reputable shop in the US to send my rack to for a rebuild. It works fine, but has some leaks. While the engine is out I'd like to take care of it. Any recommendations would be appreciated. Philip
Hi, Sorry, not in the US, but I have had a few Jaguar power steering racks (I think the DBS V8 had the same system as my E V12) reconditioned at Kiley-Clinton Engineering in Birmingham, UK. IIRC their website is www.steering-racks.co.uk Cheers, Pekka T. Fin. Ps. They say most of the racks start to leak due to too little use. A good idea is to every now and then turn the wheels a bit back and forth even without running the car. Of course the best is to use them more often!
Thanks for the referral. I may use them if I can't find someone in the US, but hard to imagine that there wouldn't be a rack specialist here.
These guys did my '92 Virage rack in 2005, cost $325. Easy to deal with. I shipped it to them and they returned it to my mechanic for installation. Advantage West in Cathedral City, CA Advantage West - Heavy Duty
Almost a year later and now that I'm ready to send the R & P to Advantage West, it seems that they have gone out of business. If anyone knows of another shop in the US, please pass along their info. Thanks
Every big city should have a steering rack rebuilder. Find your local one and see if he can handle it. One did my 308's just fine with bronze bushings vs Ferrari crapola. And the price ? Dirt cheap.
The reason I asked which rack it was is because many cars use the same one. For instance, the one in my Mondial is really the same as the one in an XKE, a Lotus Europa (!), etc. My Ferrari mechanic reconditioned mine with a bronze bushing from a Pantera. Sorry this repair is dragging on, but as a last resort the factory can rebuild it, no? PS: post photos of your rack(s), and perhaps someone can lend a hand.
