Mitch, have you EVER seen a thread on FCHAT that didn't eventually get hijacked or deteriorate into something 180 degrees from the original post? You need to come down a bit more often and we'll convert you. You may gain a few pounds, but we'll get you in the end. And now back to our original programming. Yes we managed to repair the cracked subframe (driver's side, vertical support adjacent to the control arm. Because of the limitations that not removing the engine posed (sorry Ernie), it was decided by committee to weld the breach on all four sides as a temporary measure until a more permanent repair could be completed when the engine-out is done somewhere down the road. This seems to be something that may afflict early model 355's, but we urge you all, regardless of the year car you own, to scrutinize your subframes more thoroughly for any signs of metal fatigue or cracking. Once I have the car apart, I'll be welding on some support gussets to help stabilize the sub-structure. If you should detect a defect, we would appreciate it if you'd pass along the information for the benefit of us all. Now that wasn't so bad was it? The cooking and comraderie is what these Stoogefests are all about. I really wish we could hold an international event somewhere convenient for the rest of you guys to join us. Vince did we notice that the later model had a gusseted suspension mounting point to remedy this? I will check the 95 challenge cars BTW those cross members weighed a lot more then the OEM ones, took them off and put them on a scale. So newer frame parts are made to a higher quality. I will post pics later with weights
Checking weight differences between years would be good information ..... assuming they just didn't add more paint ...
Yes, the later model subframe had one of the uprights with a gusset. The other did not. Henry's didn't have one at all, as I recall. And although we did not measure, the replacement subframe pieces (the 2 removable horizontal ones at the bottom) were noticeably beefier than the stock pieces.
