Summer tires for the FF

    As the winter tire season comes to an end I need to get a new set of summer tires. What is the learned view on Michelin Pilot Super Sport vs the Pirelli PZero ? if there is a thread on this already please let me know as I searched and came up blank...

    I had Pzeros and had a bit of tram lining on bad roads. When i put on my Michelin winter tyres there was no evidence of tram lining. I have just changed the winters for Pilot Super Sports and again no tram lining and a much more planted feel. Will not go back to Pzeros

    that's good to hear, my FF seems particularly susceptible to tram lining and cambers, and it's on the P zeros. I'll be switching to MPSS asap.

    We have MPSS on our 458 and I've driven 458s with PZeros along with other Fcars including the FF... My DD 991 came with PZero tyres and they were horrible. MPSS tyres on it now. I don't like that they flatspot from sitting a short while, they crack, they are noisy, they ride rough, perform below what could be expected in the wet, they don't inspire confidence due to the fact that I don't think they feel planted and what not. No thanks.

    Use MPSS on F12 in summer for daily driver and much better than P

    I've had both on the FF and on a California. The MPSS last quite a bit longer but the PZero's stick far better! I had the MPSS on my '12 Cali because I failed to specify them. Getting on an expressway entrance ramp in the late spring on a 50 degree day, not pushing it too hard, the rear end broke away HARD, scared the crap out of me even though I already had 30,000 miles in a California of daily summer and winter driving. The tires were brand new and I took them off and bought a set of PZeros, problem solved but expensive.

    I think I have MPSS on my FF for the summer but have to look as I still have the SottoZero's on here in NW Ohio.

    Has anyone attempted to fit aftermarket 19" wheels to increase available tire choices and also decrease chance for getting flat tires (esp for the front)?

    And as has been said, flat tires are not an issue on these cars.

    No fear! Just live your life and enjoy the damn car.

    I have f12 wheels on my FF and I'm running the MPSS. I'm in the minority as I really cant tell the difference between the Mich and the Pirelli. I have 2 430 spiders, one has mich and the other Pirelli and I cant tell which is which.

    I have MPSS on my FF and they will need changing soon. In general I would always go for the softer compound tyre for more grip. Do you think the PZeros are softer Rick?

    MPSS are much harder for sure, but don't you think a new Michelin at 50 degrees (which is on the low end for a summer tire) would be a little slippery anyway?

    I think I might have given it a couple hundred miles to get the normal grip then judge.

    Should not pose a problem as the brakes are the same as those fitted to the 458 and Cali T. But not sure what you mean when you say there are more tyre choices. I can't see any manufactures that makes a 295/40R19 tyre or even a 305/40R19. You can of course fit narrower tyres, but what's the point in that. It can work as a winter tyre option, in which case a set of Cali wheels would fit as the offsets are the same.

    About new tires: All of them have this chemical residue on the surface from the molding process. So give them some time to wear off after a few hundred miles and they should be fine after that.

    Thanks for the infos! Same offsets!--That's great to know! Indeed, more options for winter tires in 19". The rear aspect ratio of 35 on 20" wheel is okay. I worry mostly about the front after one member mentioned about 4 flat tires and 2 bent wheels, all on the front right side.

    After thinking on the subject last night the real deal is the MPSS take WAY longer to heat up and get sticky. The PZeros must be much softer as they stick when not race track hot. Car & Driver did a test a few years ago on all of the performance tires, right after the MPSS came out. They rated the MPSS best, MPS (sports not super sports) down the in the range, and PZero's worst, a blind test meaning the driver walked to the car sort of blindfolded so he had no idea what tires were on the car. However they spent plenty of time on the track heating them up before the test driver got the car. For normal daily driving I'll take the PZero as it takes very little to heat them up. If $$ is a factor then go for the MPSS as they last far longer because they are harder.

    It's too bad that Conti DW don't have them in the oem sizes. I have had good experience with them. In the wet, Conti DW is amazing compared to any other ones out there.

    Thanks Rick, as i do a lot of short journeys here in the UK my tyres often don't get that hot so maybe PZeros would be better in this respect. Not sure what to make of the tram-lining issue mentioned above?

    Pirelli is releasing new PZeros (i believe current retail version was launched in 2007):

    Stop that tyre, if you can

    Maybe its worth to wait since probably these new Pzeros will set the standard.

    Currently my 612 has MPSS, which i prefer comparing with the PZeros I had before (the 2007 model)
