Wouldn't it be easier to learn how to use a manual transmission ? ;)

99.9% of all Europeans have mastered that "art" since at least 18 years of age. We learn to drive in manual cars. Manuals are as instinctive as breathing and as exotic as a loaf of bread over here.

    Kind regards,

    Nuno.

Haha, right. The 355 f1 is indeed a manual transmission. But I get it. All my other cars in the past were all manual, stick shift cars. From my very first car, a 1965 VW Beetle, to an 83 Audi Quattro Coupe, to my track NSX, they are all stick shifts. My daily driver is a stick shift. I just wanted something different for the Ferrari.

I can drive a stick with my eyes closed. My wife and all my 3 kids can drive stick.

Sigh, all this macho crap about stick shifting is getting kinda old.

    ;-)

    Cheers

See Nuno? He 'got it'; it was just a gentle tug on his leg. I don't have anything against auto trannies, or even semis. Hell, I wouldn't even mind if my sister married one - well, maybe just dated. :)

Apologies for the late follow-up. Adam didn't have a clear recollection after doing this three years ago and I finally had a chance to ask him in person and jog his memory. He explained that there are two multi-pin connectors under the very front of the center console (meaning the carpeted section of the tunnel) and believes he found the wire in one of them. Said to look for a wire that terminates in one of those two connectors and verify with an ohmmeter. That wire needs to be extended up behind the dash. He properly attached the extension wire to the other end of the connector, but mentioned you could alternatively simply tap the existing wire.

So, I finished this install. I have a car that has the second bung on the bottom of the oil tank. To be clear, There is an oil drain plug and next to it a temp sensor with a wire that runs toward the front of the car that I have no idea where it goes. I tried to find it to no avail.

To be safe, I connected a new wire for the sensor and the existing wire to the single temp sensor lead. Sensor Markings: VEGLIA 12-24V B8 73-04

When I power up the car, the temp gauge immediately points straight up to 210. Temp then moves up from there as things heat up in the tank.

Not sure what to try next. Any ideas on why the discrepancy?

    Hi Watson,

It is most likely a sensor/temp gauge mismatch. Its been a while since I did this mod, but when I was researching the factory oil temp gauges, they came in a few different flavors. There was an American version, then there were UK, Australian and Japanese versions of the temp gauges as well. I know the Japanese version reads in Centigrade, while all others read in Fahrenheit. Not sure what the other differences are. So you would have to make sure you get the right sensor for the corresponding gauge.

    Hope this helps.

I think that you are correct. sensor / gauge mismatch. I am working on that premise now. Thanks.

    There are 4 gauges

167432 - US Deg F with oil symbol on R/H side
167433 - GB Deg F with oil symbol on L/H side
    167408 - ?
    167409 - ?

While not 100% certain, I am pretty sure the one I have is the 167432.

The sensor in the tank came with the car. I have NO idea what the hell it is wired to to, despite hours of trying to ohm the other end under the dash. In the end I simply added a wire and ran it to the gauge.

The Sensor I have says this on the flats: VEGLIA 12-24V B8 73-04

Pretty sure looking at your pictures yours says K8 on one flat.

Thinking the sensor I have is for something else and need the one you have (107576) to make the gauge work...and pray that I do not mess up what ever the current sensor is wired to.

I know the OP said he needed to machine the sensor for a seal, has anyone else done this? Can you just use a gasket?
I'm going to be doing it at the next oil change

This project is on my list but sadly I've been too busy to get to it.

I have not confirmed nor can I deny, but I was told that the wiring harness is the same for F1 cars as gated (at least the F1 cars that have the sensor and wire) and the leads are under the dash somewhere. "Somewhere" being the key word ;)

Watson and Dave, when you say "under the dash", do you mean the center console, as I attempted to describe in post #33? To reiterate, the wire terminates in the center console, not the dash, at least in my 99.

Yes, I read that. Thank you for taking the time to post it.

I started poking at the two block connectors under the front carpet section that feed the fusebox and other panel harnesses. In the end I decided it wasn't worth it for this project. The electrics are just too delicate and starting to pry this stuff apart to find the wire carried more risk than reward.

In the end I just pulled a new wire through.

That would be the US version I believe. 167432

Units left & symbols right. GB one is reversed. 167433

Can you post the part number from the back of the gauge underneath the center terminal? Curious...

I did the same thing. It was WAY too easier to just pull a wire into the cabin than to trace that darn factory oil temp wire.

So that is what the difference is between the US and UK version. I never figured that out until now :)

But the electronics and calibration between the US and UK version is apparently identical.

It is the ONLY way to fly! :) :)

I rearranged my gauges more than most...but the pilot in me had to have it this way.

Thanks for all the help guys!
