Had a Ferrari track event yesterday - the car was amazing on track but I will post more on that later. Part of the day involved drag races between all the cars and the 488 didn't disappoint. It was pitted against a cali, 430, 458 speciale - which it had little trouble with. The closest race of the day was against an F12 which I had a mate film from the passenger seat. Both cars are stock, both had 2 passengers and both used launch control. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jkaKHXks--A
To be fair that's about the shortest drag race in history so the start was everything. Fair play, the 488 is fast! So it should be, it's got two hulking great turbo chargers on it. All about speed? Buy a GTR for 1/3 the price and spend the other 2/3rds on engine mods and you'll leave anything on the road in your dust.
Sorry, just been for a drive in my Speciale and feeling a bit sensitive as I feel a little deeper in love with it 😉
No doubt the 488 is faster. Ferrari aimed high with the 488 and target the Mclaren 650s. Ferrari claims the 488 is faster than the 650s up to 124mph anyway. I know everyone is going to start showing me video of roll races but I'm interested in a dig race. The F12 is fast but too heavy and not as much tq as the 488. I had no doubt the 488 would win..
Money being no object I would take the F12 as well. I wish we had a full quarter mile or even a full mile for that matter, but that's all we had. Like many (not all) it's interesting all the same to see how they compare in identical conditions. How would they go from a roll? Who knows, but if someone does this test I would love to see the result irrespective of which one wins - as I think they are both fantastic cars. A V12 Ferrari at full noise is one of the sweetest sounds ever. Eurodyno why are these things always binary? I think we all understand we can have an 8 sec GTR for the same price. Is it all about the acceleration... of course not, but is it really irrelevant?
you can't compare the two. a F12 is good and fast for going straight. the engine infront is too heavy and the car nose dives a too much when braking into corners. For me it is the 488 for the track and twisty mountain roads and F12 for the Boulevard.
Speciale is waaaay faster than F12 around Fiorano in any hands short of the very very skilled (such as mine - around 3 to 4 seconds). So, around a track I would expect 488 to have the advantage of power but a slight disadvantage with 'focus' against the Speciale. Overall, a second or so to the good for a decent supercar driver. F12 way off. Would even be slower in the hands of the instructors I'm pretty sure. Great car though.
Incorrect ! 488 and F12B tied on Foriano Test Track. 458 Speciale slower by 1/2 second. I'll have to agree. The F12 has too much bodyroll, I thought about it tonight that for twisty roads even the standard 458 is funner.
Forget the official Fiorano lap times Rockitman, those are just PR nonsense the factory puts out - reality does not correlate well with those. BTW same thing with factory quotes for curb weight - no basis in reality.
If you check what I said....in the hands of anyone less than an expert the Speciale is quicker. Also, I have a strong suspicion that a 23.5 v a 23.0 looks like marketing to me...not good to have the little nipper faster than the beefy V12 range topper. (And did you notice all the 00 and 50 times?) When I did the pilota courses, out of around 30 people on Pilota 1 and a different 30 on Pilota 2, no one drove faster with the F12 around either Fiorano or Varano. Both the 458 and Speciale were quicker in the hands of Ferrari customers of a mixed range of abilities, including some very good drivers. As I said, I was at least 3-4 seconds slower with the F12. And when the instructors were having their own fun before we arrived, what cars were they using to try to get the best lap? Yep, the 458s.
Incidentally, it also takes a lot of effort to get 1.5 seconds better time out of a Speciale than a 458 too.
They are completely different cars...different driving and ownership experience. I still choose my 458 over a 488. If Ferrari doesn't revert back to NA, My 458 and F12 will be my last modern Ferrari's. If I collect any more f cars, I will regress and add a scud, CS and 355....of course I wouldn't mind a 275 for a real classic.
So you are saying in the right hands the F12 is faster than the Speciale. Not sure why folks compare the mid cars with the flagship. Different beasts altogether. Best is to have one of each as many here do!
