Good idea. I never understood why those idiots sacrificed the oil temp gauge on the F1 car when nearly every $45 radio has a built in clock if anyone even cares about the time.

I have a clock on my wrist, phone & radio....why do I need one in the damn dash, right? Wonder why Ferrari did that???

What a great tool this forum is. Yes, McJoe (hehe), the panel looks great ;) Thanks, you did a great job.

I really do wonder how a guy could own a 355 and not be connected with the resources and people here.

    Thanks.

Thank you for the business and trust. It's also nice to see so many folks here working on their cars and improving them in so many way.

So, is your gauge reading correctly now? Did you end up changing the sensor?

    Looks great!

For reasons undetermined, the gauge reset after a couple of cycles and appears to be working. I suspect that sensor is simply old and intermittent.

The pic of my dash was during a run we did on Sunday. Cruising down the highway it was really nice to see that oil temp instead of the time. :)

Regardless, I have a new sensor I bought from Ricambi. Next oil change and it'll go in.

My right hand on the steering wheel blocks my view of the left most gauge, which is oil pressure on the F1. I like to be able to see oil pressure at a glance, so took the opportunity to swap the oil pressure and fuel gauges when this mod was done.

This may vary for others depending on seating position and whether the smaller 360 steering wheel is used, so best to plan the gauge arrangement before taking the cluster apart.

Winner! :) That's where I was heading...but I gave up on that mess!

I will officially buy you a beer or glass of Cask 23 if we ever meet up. Your call!

    Nice job man....

Curious. Does that wire just terminate there, or carry on? I mean really, it just stops there?

IT stops right there, no wire on the other side. I suppose the harness from the engine to that point is the same F1 and gated, and past that point its version specific.

I had to run wires from my oil pressure gauge to the dash cluster when i removed my F1 selector for the manual version cluster which has water temp/oil pressure. I did this swap to complete my F1 to gated swap but still left everything marked with instructions on how to go back.

While we all suspected it was the same harness, it is great to fully understand that the wire simply terminates in the block. Had it carried on to an ECU somewhere was a constant question for me.

Keep Calm & Carry On! :)

Great Thread! I remember wanting to do this in the past. The 355F1's has to have a oil temp as all modern cars need it for the master ECU. Why did Ferrari choose not to display the gauge?

An OBD-II scanner should pick up the oil temp reading? I will have to check. I am planning a new GPS data logger in the near future. See below.

Till then I'm joining in on this mod for now!

Just confirmed is the fact that the lead form the oil tank sending unit terminates at the end of the harness. It does not feed an ECU and as a result can not be used in any OBDII codes.

The 355 F1 car is running blind on oil temp...both electronically and optically (until you install the gauge anyway).

Not being an electrician, do you pull the brown wire out of the white plug and then crimp a extension wire up to the gauge area to make the final connection ?

I wouldn't do that. The easy way is to tap the wire. The right way is to attach your extension wire to the other end of the connector.

I don't think it's common for ECUs to consider oil temp. Perhaps you're thinking coolant temp, for which the ECU in the 355 has its own temp sensor independent of the sensor used to feed the gauge.

In any case, the 355 does not support the standard OBD2 PID for oil temp. And I highly doubt it uses a custom PID, considering that later F1 builds don't even have the temp sensor in the oil tank anymore. Seeing that you have a 1999, you would do this mod with thermistor replacing drain plug, but instead (or in addition) of installing the oil temp gauge you would connect the wire to an analog input on your data logger.

Yup. That was my plan had I found the wire in the terminal block. New connector & wire picks up where the existing one stopped. Total OEM look....still kinda wish I did it that way... Running a new wire is equally effective.

I removed the pin from the connector completely intact and soldered a brown wire to it and covered it with heat shrink tubing. That wire runs to the connector at the harness where is can disconnect with the other gauges.

    Done!

    Great! But do I see:

Clock - Fuel - Oil Temp?

Where did the oil pressure gauge go?
