Good info. Now that you bring this up, I'm wondering if that could have been a factor in the tragic Dunn accident?

Hi guys, sorry for letting this go dead for so long. Got the car back in early October,
and my mechanic's diagnosis is that the fuel filler neck was cracked and dripped fuel onto the hot headers just as many others have suggested. Get this checked, and again
please for the love of your 355 get a Halon/Halotron extinguisher. Even a dry chemical ext is better than nothing!!

The filler neck that failed didn't look like it would be very hard to fabricate a better part
(a hose that gets unpressurized liquid from union A to union B via gravity). It is also
very cheap and thin, made of some plastic that obviously won't always last 20 years
    without leaking.

I remember reading here that Scuderia Rampante was working on something for this hose, but it never got off the ground due to limited need IIRC. Does anyone else remember this?

Yup i remember SR stating this and I asked about availability a couple times but they never got it done.

    Shame.

I never fill my 355 right up to include fuel in that pipe.
    Really appalling design.
    Danger there.

You say there was a crack in the fuel filler neck...

So was it the metal part of the fuel filler piece or...
the plastic connecting pipe between it and the tank?

I work on Yachts of all sizes, and have installed Halon systems in a few. There automatic, I'll look into a small system today and post the results. Not sure if they make a small system, maybe 5 Lb.

Fireboy makes many sizes of auto, and auto/manual Halon systems. There from 25 cu foot area to 1000. I'm sure a 50, to 75 cu foot would be plenty. They can be mounted in the engine compartment under the rear window. I would call Fireboy, or a marine supply store like West marine.

Bumping this thread as a friendly reminder to all owners to get a halon extinguisher... :) as it's spring time and folks are getting their cars out for a drive :)

I bought one a while back and never mounted it. Sunday prior to going for a ride, I at least put it in the front compartment (securely).

I need to get around to making some mounts to keep it in the cockpit :)

    Halon is illegal in europe
I do not totally fill my 355 full of gas.
I do not let gas fill the hose connecting filler neck and petrol tank.
This is where a dangerous leak has occured on quite a few 355's maybe 348's too with disastrous consequences.
