Hi all. I've just completed a clutch job on this 1982 308 GTSi, 40k miles. New clutch disc, pressure plate, machined the old flywheel, new throwout bearing, fresh oils/seals. The car will not engage any gear while running. Tried the clutch adjustment as outlined in the updated Ferrari bulletin (see image), but no joy. It seems impossible to adjust the clutch based on their figures.
I'm sure you did it but if the clutch splines are not lubricated the plate will stick in position. I have had clutches and pressure plates not machined properly as well. Now that the cars are getting older some clutches are being made by companies other than the original manufacturer and they can have clearance issues. It may sound funny but I have tried 3 different clutches from three different suppliers, all of them would not allow the car to shift while engine running. Eventually I had to very closely inspect and I found the the clutch plate was just barely rubbing on the inner hub and basically it would continue to rotate with the crankshaft even when the clutch was released.
In three decades of servicing these cars, I've never had a problem with an OEM clutch. I suspect that's the root cause here; aftermarket junk bought cheap. But I could be wrong....
If the Clutch plate is oversize, may be too much Pre-load. Although not ideal, may be you can try to fix by adding, say a 1ml washer between the pressure plate and the flywheel. had this problem with my Testarossa. The preload was not correct (it is double clutch) and it was very difficult to go into gear. I inserted washers (without taking the bell housing out), via the inspection hole (see attached.) and it went int gear easily. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Any chance the clutch disc is in backwards? I don't know the 308 clutch specifically, but most discs have specific flywheel and pressure plate sides.
Hi Atggreg, notice you are working on your clutch for your '82 308. I have a '79 with the old (heavy) clutch and want to upgrade to the newer setup. Problem is parts are not available, so I'm thinking of making them myself. To do this I need the dimensions of the Throw-Out lever at the bottom of the bell housing (c/l of the shaft to the c/l of the outer bearing - where the adjuster fork mounts) and also the dimensions of the bell crank bolted to the front of the bell housing (dimensions from the c/l of each bearing mount to the others). Any chance next time you're under your car you could measure these for me? I would be most grateful Bernie
Thanks for the replies all. I think I've figured out the problem. Used an AP kit from SUPERFORMANCE U.K. and the pressure plate contact point (to t.o. bearing is 0.116" further away from the stock one. I eventually got clutch function with the aftermarket bit, but cable and pedal were waaaaaaaaaay out of adjustment (like clutch pedal almost at hand level). Trying this again with the old pressure plate in place with new clutch disc and freshly machined flywheel for testing purposes. Fingers crossed that this at least identifies the problem...

I concur w Fastradio having one similar experience many years ago with a defective PP. Comparing the replacement w original (after taking it all apart again), I could see differences from manufacturing issues with the diaphragm spring pivots. One other thing to check is the disc. More recently (20-ish plus yrs ago), I had a disc break apart on my 308 at rev's during a shift. Symptom was notable vibration and difficulty shifting. Limped home slowly and did a clutch job. I think the disc was non-original / defective / or damaged during install before I bought the car. A little off the point, but measure thickness about disc to see if it's uniform. It's riveted onto a large wavy steel spring, and the riveting sets the thickness, and I've never seen this, but can imagine it and worth a quick check while you're in there.
