I am getting into another belt service on my '87 Mondial 3.2, and thought to ask this time around about the alternator belt. It is really, really tight--to the point that I had to remove the pivot bolt and move the alternator in to get it over the pulley after I ran out of room on the slot with the pinch bolt.

There is actually a lot of room left that I could move the alternator out to tighten the belt, which makes it seem the wrong belt on the car. I called Ricambi where it came from and they confirmed it is the correct part--10mm X 800mm.

I don't know if the pulley and / or alternator may have been changed in the past such that it is somehow different from stock.

    So the questions are:

    1. Is it normally nearly impossible to get the belt on?
    2. What should the diameter of the pulley be?

Thanks in advance for any insight.

Answer to first question is no you should be able to get it on without too much effort. Wrong belt?

There is actually a few different sizes for those belts. Some cars take the 800mm and others use the 7X1000mm. I always call a reputable dealer to find out exactly. Ferrari of Silicon Valley is great for these kind of details. It's happened to me before from different suppliers to get the wrong belt even thought they swear it's right.

Thanks for the responses. I just wanted to get a sense of how difficult it should be. I got it off by putting a screwdriver under it and turning the motor with a wrench. (and it wasn't so tight it took much effort or raised concern of damaging the pulley, I just had to lift it over the edge) OK for a belt I'm getting rid of but not what I want for a new one.

I can get an industrial 10X850 belt, which I may try as an experiment. It really seems like the 1000mm would be too long, but I guess that is less than an inch added to the circumference. I assume it would take a narrower groove though so perhaps it would be obvious from measuring the width of the groove.

    Thanks agaion..
