The Right Price

So what is the right price on a 308 GTS? I grew up watching Magnum P.I., and I've always loved that car. Now Im starting to save some money to buy one in about 5-7 years, but I've read that certain models are worth 25k-30k and 35-45k. Others suggest 50-65k. Maybe the article is just old, but I'm seeing very few below 60k. That doesn't seem outrageously high to me, but I dont know values like you all do. What is the right price range I should be looking at?

 

5-7 years ago 308s were half of what they are now, In another 5-7 years they will double again.

Or halve back to what they were.

Or be the same. Or be ten times. Do you think anyone really knows?

If I could predict future value of stuff I would be buying stocks, not cars. Well, stocks for the money and cars for fun. But the maintenance costs for holding shares is lower.

 

(My opinion only) Forget anything from the mags that speak to "25-35" or "35-45", I think we can safely say those days are gone. However, Brian is correct that we have no way of predicting what 5-7 years down the road looks like. If it were me knowing what I know, I'd say plan on $100k. That will either get you a mid-pack or top-end car. But again, just my humble opinion.

The cars range according to the year produced:

1975-77 NON CATs are becoming very valuable, over $200K if fibereglass, NON CAT steel carbed cars, in the 80K to $120K range, note engines are both wet sump or dry sump, the dry sump more sought after.

Moving to the 2 valve injected cars, the best buys price wise will be here, and a car in good condition will be fun, if down on horsepower.

They solved the power issues introducing the 308 Quattrovalve 1983 -85.
These are sweet cars but now at least $60 -$75K....more even $100K in top shape.

THe 328 ends the series, and the very last final cars have ABS and convex wheels.
Bring $100K up to $150K for a GTB.

BigTex...I think he was curious about what he'd be spending in 5-7 years time to get into one. And, let's assume it's not a glass car!

 

GTS were more popular, now making GTBs more rare, and of course they are stronger if you have a crash....

 

Oh, my crystal ball is foggy, but after sitting flat line for 30 years I am afraid the 308 will follow the Dino...

I don't think past $200K for a steel North American car.
Too many other cars to buy for that money, and fans of the 308 are dying of old age..

But, we had a hard time selling two 512BBis, for $75K!

Predicting future values of anything is difficult but having seen values of 308 rise very rapidly in the UK over the last 4 years my two cents would be get in as soon as you can as 80's cars are the new 60's cars and are becoming very sought after and the 308 is a true classic in terms of it's beauty and desirability as well as being a TV star so is likely to keep rising and still feels like a relative bargain compared to other classics. The GTSi looks the same to all but the real aficionado as a glass or carbed car but all the fun of ownership can be had for a fraction of the price!

But since the banking collapse here, my tellers just laugh, when I ask for money on an "old Ferrari"......I actually got a $25K loan to buy my first 1977 308GTB.
That was a Credit UNion, and I flirted the Manager up shamelessly (old classmate, always did fancy her)

I do have a snow globe of Austin...it plays the UT Fight Song, "Eyes of Texas" and little black bats swirl in there with the flakes!!!!

 

Haha cool. I stayed at the Four Seasons in Austin once and watched millions of bats one evening fly from under the Congress Ave bridge and turn the sky black!
