Ended up not buying the Ferrari but something else

Ultimately, I agree with this....I've really tried to like it because it seems like a Gallardo for grownups which is appealing but the styling is bland for the money spent.

 

Can you show evidence of this 458 market "Free fall"?

The 488 will have a degree of impact on the 458 market, but I can't see people ditching their 458's in their droves to get a 488 (some will, but not that many!).

The 488 is a supreme bit of kit, but for many Ferrari owners, the very fact that it's a turbo engine puts them off the car, despite how well it drives. (I need to see one in the metal to make My mind up, but from the pictures, I don't like the gaping intakes on the 488's flanks and would take the slower 458 over the 488 purely because it's lines look purer. I'm sure the intakes function beautifully, but they don't look beautiful to Me, unlike the 206/246/308/328 intakes that they allegedly pay homage to).

Those 458 owners who want a bit more performance, would more than likely purchase a 458 Speciale over the 488 (the 488 Speciale may well make them have to think hard though!).

Of the two cars (the R8 and the 458), in the long run I suspect that the Ferrari will fair better when it comes to depreciation - 488 or not.

Can you show where it is stated that the 458 has to be put on a battery tender when not in use? - It may be advised by the factory to put the car on a battery tender when not in use, but I'm pretty certain that it's not the case that the car has to be on a tender when not in use (unlike the LaFerrari that has to be put on a tender to prevent the hybrid batteries from becoming completely drained, resulting in an extremely expensive repair bill!).

Ferrari are aware that very few of their customers buy their cars to use as a daily driver (that's not to say they can't be used as a daily driver, it's simply a fact that most Ferrari's are either weekend playthings, or with the newer cars, often part of a collection of cars), so they realise that the cars will most likely spend days/weeks/months on end sitting around doing nothing. Based on that, to ensure that the battery is kept in optimum health, condition and performance, they advise putting the car on a battery tender during prolonged periods of non-use.

I suspect somewhere in you R8 owners manual, Audi make the exact same suggestion about using a battery tender on their car if it's not used for long periods of time.

What questions or problems are you going to encounter driving a 458 down the street?

I can appreciate that an R8 is a more "low-key" car in comparison to a Ferrari, but I'm curious as to why you think driving a 458 down a street would create more problems or questions.

It's great that you've bought the car that you feel suits your needs best, I hope you enjoy it to the full, but some of your reasons for not buying a 458 seem a bit flawed to Me (and others I suspect).

 

4rePhil, from what I understand the market on the 458 in Europe is completely different than here in the states. Seeing a lot of 458s on the market here sitting for a long period of time I've watched specie cars drop in value nearly 20k in just 5 months sitting there trying to sell. There's over 300+ on autotrader right now here in the US. I will likely get a 458 after a year or two with the R8 as it is a far superior car, but for right now I'm really enjoying my R8.

Love the quilted leather & contrast stitching on the interior. I thought that interior treatment was only available on the "Plus" - is that what yours is?

 

Love love love the R8. If I were at a different stage in life (my kids are 7 and 10) an R8 would be my daily driver. Great choice.
As for exhaust sounds, what's the R8's red line? Have you looked st aftermarket options? I bet there are some sweet options.

Redline is 8500, mine is not a plus. Finding a low mileage 14/15 V10 proved extremely difficult. There's surprisingly few out there. I've already ordered a fabspeed super sport exhaust for it. The exhaust is my biggest gripe about this car. Thank you all for the kind words, this is a great forum with some wonderful people. Although it's not a Ferrari I'd like to think that all at this level are CAR people who just love cars and driving no matter the brand.

Congrats on the car, nice choice. I agree that Ferrari offers something intangible that I haven't yet experienced in another brand (haven't tried Lambo yet). Keep doing research and wait a bit longer for prices to go down but you HAVE to try a Ferrari at least once in life.

As far as 458 values, I think they will keep going down a bit more. Most people who buy new Ferraris buy them because they want the latest and greatest. They'll get over the N/A vs Turbo thing and dump the 458 for the 488. One of the greatest Ferraris ever, the F40, has Turbos. Anyone complaining about that?

Congrats on a beautiful car. That blue is one of my very favorite colors in all of car-dom. We got my wife a Q7 S line a while back and I've really come to be a fan of Audi. Would love to add an R8 (and a 458!) to the stable at some point. I've even thought about a TTS for a relatively inexpensive daily driver for around town. It checks a lot of the right boxes for me right now.

I give it 9-12 months

Fcars after 2011 are solid, after 2012 have 7 years included annual maintenance and the New Power warranty option for 12 years. Brakes and tires for sure. It's not that scary.

You will however end up with a Ferrari someday only to realize that until you have a Bull in the garage you're just playing with toys

Just kidding, wait it happened to me, kinda, well actually yes... Reminds me, I better go move all those other cars around; their tires are getting flat.

Newly released Gen 2 R8 V10+ has 8900 RPM redline. As most manufacturers go to turbos this is likely to be one of the last of the high revving NA big power sports/GT cars. Restrained/alternative styling certainly not universally loved by all but for others it's a big part of the allure of the R8.

 

I think by the end of next year we'll see 458s in the mid to high 100's range and the market will level off a bit on them and I'll be ready for my first Ferrari by then, I have to say the verde mantis Huracan is beautiful though��

There is no right or wrong when choosing a car since there are many factors that go into the decision making process. Not everyone drinks the Ferrari Kool-Aid and those who do sometimes have a difficult time processing it.
Ignore the haters and focus on enjoying your purchase until it's time to move on to the next thing.
