That's funny I bought a 72 S in that color by mistake - thought car was red until I saw it in daylight. Spectacular car should never have sold>

May I mention in this infamous thread that I've listed my 1976 930 in the "Other Cars" classified section here ... without being hung, drawn and quartered that is ... ? Eleven year owner, not a dealer, etc, etc ...

    Thanks ... Rick Crider

My 1977 930 has been sick with a cold since the day I bought her and I finally decided to get her better recently. So off she went to Carolina Coach Crafters.

I met Patrick from CCC's about 2 years ago when I called about a car they had listed for sale. He was as honest as the sky is blue and after telling him about myself, what I was looking for etc. he actually suggested that his car wasn't for me. No sales pitch, no BS, a complete straight shooter. I should make it a point to say that I am a NYer and don't like being taken advantage of and trust few. I also lack or lacked experience a year ago and have been massively turned off by a TON of people in what I consider my hobby. There seems to be far too much focus on $ above the passion and love for the cars. I have been burned and lied to and Patrick and his partner Tim are in a league of their own.

    Back to the car...

I bought this 1977 930 with Lobster Red interior off a Pelican listing almost a year ago. It's a VERY original car with a beautiful interior and approximately 50k miles on the clock. I bought it on the upswing when cars were selling in hours and I saw a LOT of pictures and bought it sight unseen, without a PPI (lesson learned). The positive was the price is / was very fair. The negative was that while the previous owner babied the hell out of the car for almost 20 years, he drove it very little and the engine ran like crap and shat oil for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

In this VIDEO, you can hear and see the engine running and how unhealthy she sounded. After pulling the plugs and replacing, testing the fuel system (warm up regulator), replacing air filer (dated 6/1997), plugs (old and black), etc. the car ran good for about 1 minute and then resumed it's poor idle. Compression, leak down all were good but something was still wrong.. They found some weird wire lead on Cylinder 6 spark plug which could have been some kind of knock sensor (is what I was told). I had pictures and explanations to the point where it took focus to keep up! Everything is or was documented and I felt like I was apart of all the decisions and choices. A vacuum leak was fixed, but still she wouldn't idle well. They put a timing light on it and there was a skip. Cap and Rotor were new so that wasn't it. The brand new plugs put in where soaked in oil after a few minutes.

After more diagnosis, it was clear the engine needed to be pulled and rebuilt. The #8 bearing was hemorrhaging oil which would required the case being split. Second gear was grinding and I knew I wanted the tranny rebuilt as well. Down the hole we go...

I knew I wanted to clean the car up and detail both the undercarriage and interior of the car and with the engine and tranny pulled, it was off to the lift to clean the 39 years of road tar with a Power Washer (VIDEO).

With the car in the air, I asked for pic's of all the date stamps for recording and that same day, had these plus many other pics in my in-box.

Thanks Phil. It certainly hasn't made for much fun having running the way it did / does.

That said, when it is done, it will be better than new!

Like you once said, at 50k miles, these cars needs their engine rebuilt. Simple as that. Sadly, it's a huge bundle of money to rebuild these engines.

Thanks Rich. I will post a few more updates as the car continues its refresh. Patrick sends pics and updates almost daily and it's awesome. It makes me feel connected and I can't help but share them here with you guys.

I just spent $11k to go through my son's S4, and when it's done car is worth about $12k, I'll spend my money going through the motor of an old Porsche any day. Beautiful car -it will be worth every penny, I'll buy some more wine LOL.

Jamie, that undercarriage sure came clean! Was it straight water, or was there some soap?

I remember when you emailed me about my '77 a year ago. I was like, someone wants to buy my car? lol Sadly, I've only driven her maybe 100 miles since then. I drive my Boxster and 996tt a lot more.

Speaking of details...I had my new O-L-D stock Pirelli CN36 tires mounted on my '75, 15" Fuchs...I'll try and take some photos this weekend. Were CN36's always made in Germany?

WPOZZZ, my belief if that the undercarriage was sprayed with just high pressures water from a power washer.

A boxter and 996tt are nice cars but I love the rawness of a non intercooled 930. I have that thrilled feeling everytime I get in it and turn the key!

Phil, your overdue for an update on your yellow 930 non sunroof build.

76 is waiting for a paint booth install - the 77 is being repainted in correct color (it will be awesome) and 73 targa is going back together. I post some pics of 77 as soon as we get some paint on it.

Pirelli CN36, 185/70 VR15 on 7J x 15 Fuchs and 215/60 VR15 on 8J x 15 Fuchs. I believe my 185’s are later production, circa 2000’s, as they are marked, “for vintage cars only” with different sidewall markings than the earlier 215s that are made in Germany.

Pirelli CN36s were factory options for 1975 Turbos and 1976 Turbo Carreras. Although RoW 1976 Turbos were fitted standard with Pirelli P7s, it’s possible that some were optioned with Pirelli CN36s with 930/30 gearbox and 300 km/h, 911 641 532 00 speedometer.

    Nice addition, Rich!
CN36's are surely a distinctive design. Bought a set for a long hood, back-in-the-day, as they were the "go-to" tire for Porsches.

    Nice.

I remember some early 911's with Semperit tires that had a tread pattern very similar to the CN36.
    Probably aftermarket, not factory.
