Air Injection system Hose broken, Still Drivable?

    Hey All,

    Slowly working in my 328 engine bay when I moved the main crossover hose that runs between the 2 rails, and this connection just broke because of the rust. Wasn't holding to much because I barely touched it. I am presuming that this is a one way valve and that I will still have no issues driving around for the rest of the summer.

    Haven't started the car, because I have been working on other small projects around the engine bay, and I have a lot of it dismantled.

    Also, what are these white wires for? I see a clip on them but cannot figure out where it is supposed to be screwed to...

    The wires are for the ignition sensors on the flywheel housing. If the one way valve is working you may be temporarily ok. If you have cats I presume the air injection should be also operational.

    It is drivable, but it will sound terrible. You need to replace that.

    Yeah, I kind of hoping that it won't sound like crap. I am going to remove that header and put plugs in instead. Going to remove both headers.

    Where do I screw that white wire clip into? Can't seem to find the location for that clip

    They have a brass cap at hardware stores that screws right on if you can get the broken check valve off...

    check the parts XREF thread. for the 308qv, check valves are readily available

    The check valves are a GM part readily available. I'd just pick up two and put them on.

    It will cause issues for the Lambda system as it's like having the cutoff valve always open (so air will be wrongly drawn into the exhaust stream during warm-running and bamboozle the O2 sensor - which it was probably already doing if the metal shell was that rotten). Plus relying on it to not let hot exhaust gas out into the engine bay is just way too risky IMO -- as the guys indicated, readily available at US auto parts stores or cap off the air injection manifold end with a metal 3/4" NPT pipe cap from the hardware store for a temporary fix.

    PS Use two wrenches to remove -- or your break/bend the air injection manifold.

    I wouldn't drive it until the part is replaced or the air-injection system is sealed up. If the one-way valve has failed -- likely with the rust you're indicating -- then you're just getting hot exhaust coming out, or additional air into the exhaust system messing up the O2 sensor's accuracy.

    If you're changing one, you might as well change both valves, the T coupling they lead to (probably rusted as well), and all the short lengths of hose. The front check-valve is a PITA to get off and replace due to clearances around it, unless you take off the engine lid. The rear valve is much easier.

    That one near the firewall is ... of course the hard one to change. The big wrenches have trouble fitting in there.

    It does cost all of $10 at Autozone. and is the same for the 348, 355. ..

    It will have an exhaust leak out of the header.....

    You guys are right about the big wrenches not fitting anywhere near there.

    Was actually entertaining the thought of putting JBWeld on the end of that valve and sealing it, until I remove the engine later this year
