Carl has owned over 50 Ferraris over the years, mainly in the 1970's and '80s. He lives here in St Petersburg, Florida, just a mile from where I live and we are good friends. He's let me scan all his old photos of the Ferraris he's owned, plus a few others that he photographed at the time and I'm having fun posting one a week on my own website, plus a write up of what Carl remembers about each one.

I hope you all enjoy them!

Sorry John, but as much as I enjoy your articles and photos, I had to delete the link to your commercial site. I think it's great that you're sharing, but it would be even better if you would post the pics and stories here instead of the link.

    Yep. 06529, originally short-nosed.

Dyke, now that it's been brought up, I actually have a few questions about this car:

    1. The nose was obviously modified early on - any idea when or by whom?
    2. Raab lists this as an original 6-carb car, you've identified it as an original 6-carb car (Cavallino), but the engine build sheet shows 3 carbs. Mistake somewhere? Changed at some point?
    3. You've listed side exhausts as an original special feature. Will you share whatever you have on this (documents/pics)?

Don't mean to be a pest at all, by the way! Just trying to fill in my blanks.

You know, as long as none of the paying sponsors complain, here's a compromise - direct links to the articles themselves:

Wayne: I will try to answer your questions:

    1. Car was raced fairly extensively in Italy, primarily hillclimbs, by the first three owners. I have lots of photos.

    2. Crashed, most probably after the Bologna-Raticosa event in May 1966. Re-nosed at Scaglietti's. Common then, why put the old style nose back on, when for the same money, you can get the latest version.

    3. Engine Build Sheet shows three carbs, but six carbs installed prior to installation in car, as shown on Factory Allestimenti Sheets.

    4. Chassis Build Sheets show Exhaust " Abarth con uscita laterale".

5.First owner was Dr. Giacomo Resigno, a hillclimb specialist from Naples who drove under the pseudonym "Jacopo".

We used to think about re-converting the car to short nose configuration, but once we discovered the actual race history, we feel the long nose is a part of the life of the car when it was raced.

Great story, thanks for the explanation. Did it compete on Borrani's or alloy wheels?

Thanks Dyke, was it on Starburst wheels or Campys? I think I may have seen your car at Hajduk's shop 15 years ago or so.

375+: Starburst, and when we got the car, they had been through the "wars".

Please note the correct chassis numbers, photos below:

    Not 065 S but 0065 S.
Not 0490 GT but 0490 AM.

    Marcel,

You're right, I'll get the numbers changed when my IT lady comes in.

    Thank you.

    Marcel,

Could it be that 0065 had the "/S" added after it was converted by the factory from a Tipo 166 specification to a Tipo 195 specification? Or did it leave the factory first of all as 0065/S?

    Absolutely not.
Four digit odd serial number with slash and suffix "S" all stamped at the same time.

I doubt if 0065/S was ever updated. Munz owned and raced another car, 0097/S.

There were at minimum four different coupes with the panoramic rear window. 0065/S appears to be the sole survivor.

Damn John Starkey, what a nice series! I love these stories and for me this is what makes the Ferrari experience so unique. Every car has a story and most of them are interesting.

    To: DWR 46.

I spent a happy 90 minutes with Carl this morning and showed him the photos that you posted; he said that he remembered that you came to his house to pick up the car? With your wife? And that you were a bit younger than him. He's astonished to hear that you still have it but says congratulations, you knew a great car when you saw it!

Writer: Carl is correct, Sue and I went to his house to see the car when we first looked at it. Carl took us to Gary Bettenhausen's farm in Tinley Park, where Chas Pritchard was working on it for Carl. After we bought the car, we picked it up at his house a couple of weeks later. Yes, we were younger, and Carl did his best to try to convince us to NOT buy the car! He felt that two poor newlyweds should not be spending money on an old Ferrari.

For "Jacopo" I have the following:

    23° Sorrento - Sant'Agata on 03.05.1965, 250 GT, result 2nd in class
4° Coppa della Primavera on 03.04.1966, 275 GTB, result 1st in class
2° Cava dei Tirreni - Badia on 26.06.1966, 250 GTO, result 1st in class

The 275 GTB will be chassis 06529. Perhaps others have more info?

Sempre: The 3/4/66 event was with his 2nd GTB, not 06529. He had sold 06529 by this date.

So who crashed 06529 at Bologna-Raticosa in May 1966 then?
