    True, he didn't intend to do the whole season but he skipped some races that he was supposed to do because he sucked. Well, not he, but the car, so my point is still valid.

    Many people talk about technology in motorsport as a inherently bad thing because it dehumanizes the sport. But they forget that this technology has been created and built by humans. Intelligence is more "human" than the ability to turn a steering wheel and push pedals. As I´ve said, a machine already could do that but no way a computer would be able to build a car.

    Shut it down and go back to pit boards. The driver drives, the pit crew works on the car. No need for those million $ computer trailers where the engineers sit. Engineers set the motor somewhere between power and longevity for the race, and let the driver manage boost, brake bias...

    No, sorry to contradict you vehemently, but your point is not valid!!

    Fangio announced his retirement after winning the German GP in 1957. He was crowned world champion later on.

    He appeared at Argentine GP for PR reason to boost public attendance at his home GP as part of a farewell tour in his country. He drove a private Maserati 250F entered by the Argentina Automobil Club.

    Mid season, Fangio came to the French GP and drove another private Maserati entered in his name at the insistence of a film company that prepared a documentary about him. Fangio accepted to participate so that some footage of him driving could be taken.

    These 2 last appearances on the track didn't amount to a serious attempt to race. Also, he didn't decide to retire because he couldn't find competitive cars in 1958. His decision to retire had already been taken a year before in 1957.

    Fangio didn't "skip" races in 1958: he was already retired!
    I wish you check those facts...

    So the point upon which you based your argument is nil.

    Why limit it? The best driver is the one that can make best use of all information, and that includes changing his driving style mid-race based on 'coaching' or whatever information is out there. I don't see that as being a worse driver but a better one that can adjust on the fly and get quicker. I want to see the drivers get the absolute maximum out of the machinery using whatever data or information that can to do so. If you can be coached mid-race to take a corner differently and can adjust your style on the fly to do so, you're a better driver than the guy that can't.

    Seriously, I'm not so sure 'coaching' is legit though. I could argue it either way, but telling him his 'mate is 'x quicker thru turn y' just doesn't seem quite right to me.

    OTOH, we know they share telemetry data in their debriefs, & it's trivial to overlay the traces, so why not allow the same in real time?

    I recall Smedley once telling Phil he could do turn one in Monaco flat; Michael was doing it, but Phil wasn't convinced until he saw the data.

    I guess it's a question of 'philosophy'; many here voted that there shouldn't be any comms allowed at all, while others want it to be 'open season' where anything goes.

    I'm leaning towards anything to help your guy go quicker - be that coaching, technical info, details of competitors tire strategies, whatever, is all fair game. We know it's a true 'team sport', so why shouldn't the strategists on the wall be allowed to play their games too?

    I initially said 'no coaching', the driver shall drive the car 'alone & unaided', but thinking more, why not? If my strategist is better than yours, shouldn't I get an advantage?

    An interesting debate & poll either way.

    I seem to remember in the Hungarian GP of '96 (?) that Ross Brawn told Schumacher that he needed to put in a specific number of qualifying laps if he wanted to jump the 2 Maclarens using the under and over pit stop strategy.

    At the time I thought it was a brilliant strategy but it is almost coaching which I think sucks.

    If they had planned it before the race along with a few other strategies and then during the race Ross goes "plan B Michael" (on a pit board of course :p ) then Michael would know that that was the time to execute their pre-conceived plan.

    I really see no down side if radio comms were stopped except the whining would be limited to ïn-car" :p

    Of course you'd have to take Elton's smartphone off him :D

    Mainly because there's 1-2 cases those things get trapped in the brake ducts and overheats the brakes. Fred was the latest some time ago.

    However, they should just let someone tear it off during the pitstops.
