    Just as an FYI, contacted Stabilus to see if the glove box strut (Stabilus 1686AW 0050N) is still available. (I need one also but from most responses here they don't last so decided to pass on it)
    This is the response I received;

    "we are a distributor for Stabilus and they have asked us to contact you on part number 1686AW, your cost is $145.65 each and lead time is 4-6 weeks."
    "It is made in Germany"
    Thanks
    Mike

    I put a new strut in approx 1 year ago and checked it today and its already failed. They just do not last. It would have been opened at maximum 2 times in that year.

    My sentiments to them (Stabilus) exactly but I was a bit less diplomatic. At $10 they're worthless because they don't last but a few weeks, at $146 it's BS since they seem to know these things were problematic.

    I only open my glove box to hand over the ownership and insurance info. When I do I'm usually po'd enough about why I am handing over said documents that I don't worry about the non functioning strut :)

    Frank, I checked out Strutwises' website and they had great feedback from there customers. Have you been happy with the results and how long has it been since you reinstalled your glovebox strut?
    Thanks,
    Stephen

    I also installed a new OEM one a few months ago and doing ok.
    You can ask the person to check for one that has a nice strong spring action
    before selling it to you. These come in a plastic bag, so checking them out is no problem.

    I used a towel underneath the area when changing mine in case the
    little clip holding the spring in the glovebox decided to shoot out when replacing.
