Stumbled upon this ad. for the RHD 308 being listed for sale #45831: 1984 Ferrari 308 GTSi Dragged some pictures by screenshots. What exactly is this? Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login The VIN is different from the one on F-Register which reads ZFFRA13D000045831 and it's ZFFNA02D000045831 in the above ad. I'm confused!
Looks like the mystery comes down to the significance of digits #4, #6, and #7 in the VINs- a job for the Ferrari entrails readers.
Except the serial 45831 and the stamped date of 12/83, others correlate to an Australian 308 GTSi 2V. The serial seems more suitable for a QV but not 2V cars. The details of the car is a combination of them though.
That silver plate has nothing to do with Ferrari per se, the number is the approval for a 'low volume' import - either a private or non-homologated for Australian design rules vehicle. In effect it's a permission to register a non-compliant car.
Love the RHD and it's a close brother to my own Euro QV.. But I kept thinking while looking at it something is amiss. Completed a total restoration yet it seems it has a US rear deck lid, one US flag mirror and gloss black paint everywhere??
Hmmm... "Upgraded Motec electronic fuel injection system." Notice the fuel rails in the engine bay photograph... Wonder what they're asking for it?
Looks like a Euro car from front and US from rear with diaper, rear deck etc. Cut and shut maybe According to VIN decoders the 4th digit should be R not N if it was Australian market car but the 8th digit is D which is a RH Australian car. The ninth digit is 0 which means it's a non US car. The F register vin (13) shows it as a 308 QV but the ad vin (02) is showing it as a 2v GTsi which is what it looks like. Interesting..........
Aren't the additional gauges in the wrong place for a GTSi? Should be on centre console? Were they still making 2V in 83/84? I thought it was replaced by the QV in 82/83. Some kind of FrankenFerrari !? Kinda fun mystery.
The "12/83" on the Silver plate pictured was fitted in Australia and designates when the car arrived in Australia, not when it was actually built. Australian spec. 2vi cars were a "mish mash" due to local Australian rules at the time. The Australian 2vi cars were amongst the last 2vi 308s built and were produced at the time the QV production had commenced, hence they all received the Cibie "flash to pass" lights under the bumper that were fiited to Euro QV models as well, with at least one receiving the QV model front bonnet/hood cover with grille and all had the Euro QV indicator lenses on the front wings. They also got the Euro front bumper bar but the USA spec rear bar and "diaper" around the exhaust. Also USA spec engine cover and USA spec digiplex boxes and exhaust manifolds, but no cat. converters. USA spec flag mirror(s) but the old carby model Momo steering wheel instead of the Nardi that most other 2vi cars worldwide received. The oil temperature and clock remained on the dash on all Aussie spec 308's through to the 328 models due to local requirement that instruments had to be dash mounted in the drivers line of vision! Ambitious pricing by the dealer to say the least and why the 2vi cars are really unloved down under!
Thank you for the explanation. Very interesting indeed. Would you mind telling us what they're asking for this 308?
Not sure what the ask $ is , dealer is Dutton garage and has it as POA. Maybe ask in the Australian section, sure someone there will know?
Wow very interesting. Thanks very much for clarifying. So it is a FrankenFerrari but made by Ferrari!!! Just goes to show when it comes to Ferrari's never assume anything!!!
Thank you for the explanation! You learn something new everyday. Always looking at RHD QVs and never realized the Australian RHD 2Vs are such a mixed breed. So the car is legit even with the serial number well into QV period?
I've been looking at them for many years. Mostly just like a hobbit and perhaps buy another QV B some day
Australian spec. 2vi cars were a "mish mash" due to local Australian rules at the time. 100% When I was looking at all the local 308 for sale here in OZ a few years back, I noticed this and it keeped me away from the Oz delivered 2vi. I ended up finding a uk delivered 2vi, which for me ticked all the right boxes. -Dave.
This is weird, seems like this s/n belongs in this 83 QV group http://www.308qvregister.com/WebMainPages/1983%20GTS.htm but my 84 QV production date is also Dec. 83 and it's listed the 84 QV group.
