I want to replace the sensor in the driver side mirror. Can I access it by just removing the mirror or do I need to remove the inside door panel?

Bob sorry not possitive on this but I have had the right side mirror off and there is just plugs on it. I would think the drivers is the same. The big problem is the plug is bigger than the hole so in order to get the mirror off you need to mark the plug and pull the pins out.

Then you can pull out the pins one at a time. My guess would be drivers is same. So at a minimum make sure you have a tool to get it apart. I did not buy the tool separately I used the one that came with my gold connector kit so I am not much help there.

Good luck looking forword to your posts.

You have to remove the mirror and completely deconstruct it....you cannot pull the sensor wires back thru any other way.

Before I would do all of that I would make sure the sensor is bad. If there is no test method you can unplug the existing sensor and just plug in the new one and tape it to the outside to see if it cures your a/c problem.....if not you can just unplug the new one and simply re-install the whole mirror.

If you need Bob I can post some pics...I can also tell you which tool you'll need to get the pins out of the connector.

If you could post pictures Bruce would be a big help. I have the Helm's tools if that is what it takes. Do you have to take the interior panel off to get to the connectors? I have two ECUs that I know work because they worked in another car. I'm thinking if that outside temp is bad it may default the system to defrost vents and hot air. I have A/C, I just pinch the hose to the stepper motor for temp control but would like the system to function correctly. Thanks

    Helms tool works perfectly..

On the interior start first by removing the metal triangle piece...see if the plastic connector is accessible...if it is just disconnect. If not, and you are unable to pull it up thru the hole in the door(this is the door triangle the interior triangle attaches too), then you will have to remove the door trim panel.

I can post pictures of how to deconstruct the mirror if you like....as I said prior, make sure the sensor is not working before deconstructing the mirror as it is not the most fun job to do(the reassembling and getting the wires back thru is the harder part).

Maybe someone else(like johnk..etyc.) can tell you how to check this type of sensor before you pull everything apart.

As far as I know it is just a thermistor which has temperature dependent resistance. So once you get to the connections you should be able to check the resistance with an Ohm meter and see if it varies with temperature. Perhaps using a hair dryer to blow hot air on it. Not sure about which wires though. I think there is a red/black pair for the sensor.

To be honest, I think your problem is with the ECU. I have the same problem with my car. Hot water valve stayed open regardless of settings. I checked the valve and closed it by applying voltage to it. Once closed, it doesn't open regardless of setting and I rigged up a circuit to see if it was getting any voltage to open or close from the ECU. Nothing. But AC functions fine.

Move mirror to the most further point to the right(Pic #1)

Reach in with a flat screw driver or long thin needle nose pliers and unhook the clips(Pic #2) and remove the mirror section(Pic #3)

Remove the cover....remove the nut(Pic #4).......remove the pins from the plastic connector

Remove the 3 screws holding the motor to the base plate(Pic #5)

Remove the 2 screws holding the plate(Pic #6)

    Pop the old sensor out.

I seem to have been incorrect on the wire colors.

What does the sensor do again? I noticed it.....but didn't know it was a sensor.

It senses outside air temperature for the heating and a/c unit.

I agree most times it is the ECU.You can't get them anymore, but there is a place that rebuilds them for like $300.00 if i remember.I was always lucky to find used one's.I think they post on Ebay.
