Bravo !! You are the first on this forum to accept that open wheels are an anachronism in the age of aerodynamics. Aerodynamicists spend their time fighting the effect of the open wheels, standing in the wind like barn doors!!!

Hey, don't say that too loudly. People might put together a movement to end it and I really hope to make it to the event one day.

We need a F1exit (fixit) around here.
Back to something like the mid 1980s.

Basically the end is near for F1 because of the coming of electric cars, which means that corporate sponsorship will shift to F-E, plus the a lot of Millenials and Generation Z now see ICE cars as being akin to cigarettes or child molesters, the cars suck donkey balls, Mercedes is dominant, and closed cockpits are coming, and even the open wheel format is under threat, as seen from the latest models for Formula E cars. Basically F1 will turn into a 2 hour LMP type series with BEV cars. I want the 90s and Prost-Senna or Hakkinen-Schumacher Schumacher-Senna Schumacher-Hill Schumacher-Villenueve back.

Then why not just dump these cars altogether and run some
    sort of 'unlimited' LMP car?
Or how about what we once knew as a 'Can-Am' car?

Yep, CanAm was an excellent series.

I would have it back any time.

Yes, the writing is on the wall, even if we bury our heads in the sand and refuse to see it.

Can-Am cars could be faster than F1 back in the day, and as I´ve said other times, F1 should not be defined by the looks of the car but for being the ultimate racing series. A F1 car should always been faster around any track than anything else in the planet and a single seater with covered wheels would be faster than current cars, just like back in the day they deleted the fenders because the car was better without them.

Just for the sake of tradition I´d just keep some sort of open cockpit, delete the fake second seat of the sports car for being detrimental for performance and would limit the size of the bodywork to not make them look too similar to sports cars.

F-1 is open wheel, open cockpit ... has been for 60 years. Evolution, as someone pointed out just above, is natural, and I welcome it. But having - essentially - a closed cockpit and enclosed wheels is not F-1 evolution; it is an entirely different form of motorsport which we already have.
    The clock is ticking ...

Totally agree with you mate. Of course that F1 should evolve as the automotive world is evolving. However, F1 should always be open wheel, open cockpit racing as this is the spirit of F1!
I'm scared that F1 is slowly becoming endurance racing! No disrespect to endurance racing of course.

Grand Prix cars of 60 years ago have hardly anything in common with todays F1, so the relation is completely irrelevant.
In 2016, you can hardly see the driver anyway.

What else F1 should have kept from 60 years ago to please the "purists" ? the wire wheels perhaps? or the front engine? the manual gearbox? or maybe the rigid rear axle? or perhaps the friction shock absorbers?

Do you see where that argument leads now?

Maybe to be more authentic to the purists, drivers should wear short-sleeve polo shirts, and cloth helmets, also? And of course God forbid having seat belts and roll-over bars!
And who had ever heard of carbon fiber or crash-tested chassis 60 years ago !!!

I also suppose that people should still travel in piston-engine biplanes to attend GPs too !!!

I don't see Formula E lasting another 3 seasons let alone shaping the future.

Nah, my opinion is that Formula E will last for many years to come. EV's are the future and there must be a top grade open wheel electric championship. F1 will remain hybrid so Formula E is the only way to go for FIA.

The combustion engine will be slowly phased out of ANY world championship in future to make room for electric power.

F1 is already hybrid, so is WEC. other championships will follow like WRC, World rallycross, etc...

Formula E is just a "toe in the water", to show the future orientation of motorsport.
