I'm about to replace the rear mounts on my 355. The car is on jack stands. I plan to jack the motor just enough to take the load off the mounts (1/16" or so). Since there is a "cone" under the bracket that fits down inside the mount, it looks to me like the 2 brackets need to come off to get enough clearance to get the old mounts off.

I don't want to jack the engine high enough to get the clearance for fear of stressing "stuff" connected at the front of the engine.

So, for those who have done this, am I correct, do the 2 brackets need to come off?

You're probably right. I need to jack it enough to release the pressure on the brackets which will be however much the mount rubber has been compressed from the load plus a little for insurance. Then remove the 2 brackets and the old mounts.

yelcab, what has been your experience, 1/8" or so? I guess I'll find out but just curious.

Remove all nuts and bolts having to do with the mount and brackets. Raise the engine by 1/2 inch, slide the bracket down and out. Then the engine mount goes up and out.

Mitch, can you be a bit more specific as Jerry is looking to only do trans mounts. What is the "bracket" ?

    Thanks

Sorry about that man. The rear mounts are a bit easier, but you still need to jack it up more than 1/16 inch.
